Sounds like ID elk numbers are on the rebound and either sex hunting may be coming back! Only 9 management zones of 29 throughout the state are underperforming. The other 20 zones meet or exceed the agency?s targeted goals.
The elk population dramatically declined in the 1990?s due to a variety of predators and winters with heavy snow. The decline started before wolves were reintroduced plus cougars and bears take a heavy toll on elk populations. 75% of elk mortality in a current study is from cougars!
