Congrats! If you get assigned on the elk refuge Sept 1 make sure you go for the opener. It was my understanding last year there was a large herd on the refuge Sept. 1. If my memory serves me right there was like 23 bison shot out of 26 hunters on Sept 1. It wasn't until December 15 when the next big herd hit the refuge. There were small herds seen on the refuge in between Sept 1 to Dec 15. I'm not sure how they assign non residents to the refuge, but you should be assigned early. You can always call the animal retrieval services. Sometimes, they can be helpful on telling you what's happening. However, if you do this, I suggest using their services. You can always hunt National Forest, but you could be in for a really long hunt. If you have any specific questions you can shoot me a pm. Good luck!
