I really love a sheep stalk

Well let's be honest. I've never hunted a north American sheep for myself. Chances are really good I never will.

However here in Texas mule deer country we have aoudad. What a fantastic quarry. My brother has been with me several times when I was guiding aoudad hunts. He has always wanted a really big one. We just never quite found the right one for him.

One day in mule deer season this year we saw a large herd of sheep. There was a respectable ram on the herd. We were about 1 mile from them. I would need to get closer to make a more accurate call on the ram.

Actually all 3 of my brothers were with me. We made a very long stalk in some rocky canyon country. We actually ended up only 100 yards from the herd. We could only see a portion of the herd.

My little brother got my attention and pointed across the canyon. 3 rams were walking towards us. I could tell 2 were giants. When they reached the canyon ledge I ranged them at 326 yards. I told my brother to shoot the middle fella. He was facing us and never offered up a broad side. All three dove into the canyon out of sight.

Our attention refocused on the herd. After about 10 minutes 2 rams appeared around a ledge. I recognized one as the ram that had initiated the stalk. I gave my brother my assessment and he decided let him go. We sat there for a few minutes just watching sheep when all of the sudden the three rams popped up on our side of the canyon in the herd. One was ready for a fight. I told my brother he was the sheep I had told him to shoot across the canyon and to let him have it.

102 yards. Dead right there. What a beauty. We caped him out and hiked out.

If you ever have a chance to hunt these rams. Don't let it pass you by.

Tri, I would also enjoy hunting one some day, but somehow I have a hard time calling them a "sheep". They are an Aoudad. A separate ancient introduced species, that isn't even related to native sheep.
Don't take me wrong, I think they are an extremely worthy prey. As a game animal they have my total respect in that regard.
I used to think they were "butt ugly" until I saw the mount you posted on here sometime back. Somehow you put some fancy lipstick on that pig and made it a beauty queen. I suspect you will do the same with your brother's!
So congratulations on the fine "Aoudad stalk".
Well done.

I think they're somewhere between a sheep and a goat.
And my favorite big game animal.
I've hunted them in NM and TX.
They are just super cool.
