I just got a new mathews switchback xt..its got a 29.5 cam so i'm at a 30 inch draw with my d-loop. I shoot 5575 gold tips with 3 inch vanes, i think they are duravanes. I have a trophy taker drop away rest on it. Every once in a while, it seems like i get an arrow or two that will fish tale of out it. Is that because the rest isn't falling away fast enough or what do you think it is? And what should i try. Thanks for any help.

oneshotonekill:

This is a very common occurrance with many archers, no matter the rest style. If only a few of your arrows fish tale out of the others, that "generally" has to do with your form sicne it is not consistent. However, it could also be your nock alignment which sets your "rooster (filter word)" vane in the wrong position, thus contacting the arm of the launcher.

First off, are you shooting it with the "rooster" vane indexed up? if so, take some lipsrick and apply on the launder arms. Shoot some arrows and see if the lipstick tranfers to your vanes. This will allow you to know where and if it is making contact. Hope it helps.

I've been shooting it all different ways...so if i shoot it up, and it still seems to tail alittle..what do i do next? i looks like no matter which way you knock it, it will hit the rest, if it isn't falling fast enough.

I have a Outback and from time to time I see a fish tail as well.Having shot short bows for some time know my problem was my grip. When I got the Outback it has a great handle but I tend to get lazy some times and get into a funk and start some bad habits I started in the 3-d arena.Dropping my arm and torquing the bow. Also with the mathews follow through is very important.Try holding the bow until the arrow hits the target it might be a slight follow through problem.
just some suggestions of the problems I have had with my mathews.good luck

Try the lipstick and see where it's contacting. You may also want to take it to a pro-shop near you to ensure it's mounted / tuned properly? NEVER had a problem with mine and I get total vane clearance.

Here are a few things to try if your arrow is fishtailing.
Check to see if bow is in tune and properly timed.
Always shoot it with the Coc$ vain in the up position with a drop away rest.
Punching the trigger will nearly always cause the arrow to fish tale. As will holding your bow differently.
Shooting in wind will make your arrow fishtail also.
And last thing I would test would be Arrow spine.
If your arrows dynamic spines are not lined up perfectly you can have some of your arrows fishtail and others shoot perfect.
I believe if you are shooting close to 70lbs with your bow you have too weak of a spine. You need to go to the 7595.
Here is how you check for weak spine. Shoot it through paper if you get a left tare that you cant get rid of it is too weak. If you can get your arrow to get a perfect bullet hole then follow these procedures.
This is the process I go through to get the Dynamic spines to match up.
Shoot one arrow through paper. If you get a bullet hole check it a different yardages to make sure it is still getting a bullet hole. All of my arrows will get a bullet hole at what ever distance I shoot at from 3 yards to 20 yards. Once I get an arrow to make a bullet hole I try another. If it doesn't get a bullet hole I rotate the nock and watch the tear move until it is perfect or close to perfect. I like to do this without fletchings, and then fletch them when all of the spines are matched up. If you have good form, and are not punching the trigger, and have the rest timed to drop out of the way quick enough for fletching clearance you will have the best groups you have ever shot. Here is a picture of 2006 Vegas 3d flights were I took first and won $500 bucks using these techniques. Hope they can help you out. If you have any questions just pm me! I am the one on the left side kneeling down.

I shoot an 05 Switchback. I've noticed the same thing . It almost always happens when I'm tired and lose focus and punch the trigger. Heres a question for one of you guys that might know. Can you correct arrow spine issues by changing point weight?

yes you can, to some extent. If you are shooting an arrow that is over spined for your bow switch to a heavier tip, if you have a under spined arrow vice versa. You can also just adjust the poundage on your bow too which is a lot easier. Had the same problem with my set up 100's would n't fly worth a hoot but put in 125's and they fly like darts.

thanks sagehunter. I shoot a 60# bow that maxes out closer to 65# with a 27.5 draw. Its border line on most of the arrow charts. I thought I could fine tune with point weight.
