I need a moose shed

Hey guys, I was wondering if anyone has a fairly large diameter moose shed that they would be willing to part with for not too much. I'm really into flintknapping and need a large billet. Moose aren't too common in my parts so I don't see me finding my own! (New Mexico)

How large are you talking? I have some big, nice sheds that I am not willing to part with, but have a few smaller ones I can let go. Does it need to be hard, or can it be white with a few cracks in it?

PM me and let me know.

The bigger the better and hardest you will part with. the reason I need moose is it is supposed to be the densest of all antlers. I have tried it with Grey elk horn but it is a little too brittle.

Awwwwwwww....look at that! Bonepiler's all choked up with the Christmas giving spirit. He's even offered one of his white, cracked MOOSE sheds. Bonepiler...I'm touched. ;-) lol

Offer him more money, Cookie...see if that'll pry one of those big ol' moose sheds loose from his hands. I doubt it, but you can try. lol

Those big moose sheds are my babies. I can't let them go--lol. You got to admit though, I am not as stingy with my sheds as Haden is.

LAST EDITED ON Dec-19-06 AT 09:30PM (MST)[p]I know. Haden has a hard time giving my kids his old cracked white dinker sheds and if you even TOUCH one of his sheds...he knows about it and you will hear about it. LOL I nearly had to pay him for a couple of 3 point deer sheds (not even matching) so I could make a curtain rod hanger in my living room a couple of years ago.

You should've come to his reception. I used his sheds everywhere and he was so particular about how they were to be displayed and which ones I could use but hey...at least someone got to see some of the best of his collection. You'll have to come check out his new house (if he ever gets into it). He's got a MAN CAVE out back that has TONS of room and I'm like, "COOL! LEt's put a pool table in here!" and he's like..."Oh no, no! This room is for all my sheds to live in." LOL

We were out looking for deer in an undisclosed location not too long ago and Haden was in front of us in his pick up and some deer ran in front of us so we all stopped. I'm looking at these deer, does and fawns, and all of a sudden Haden jumps out of the truck and SPRINTS down this ridge. I thought for sure there was a big buck or something he was running to get a look at or something but NOPE...he had found a shed. And he RAN to it as if it were going somewhere. LOL I've been waiting to tell you that story....thought you'd find that kinda funny.

TK, Its hard to find funny when you know you've done it yourself.:)

I always laugh when I think about some crusty, flaky, nasty arsed old deer shed sitting in Haden's pad, flaking all over the floor--lol. Old 20 year old sheds barely holding together that are pink and practically turning into powder. "I can't put that outside"-lol. I have done a sprint on 1 or 2 deer and elk sheds myself, ok, so maybe 1-2 hundred. People always wonder what I am doing until I come back carrying a shed, then they shake their head and laugh.

What an addiction shed hunting is. I can't seem to recover. Don't want to recover, but have admitted that I have a problem. That is the first step, right?

The first step to more and more antlers. You're only justifying your habit. LOL

Got get em', Bonepiler.

Cookie,
We usually find a broken Moose Paddle now and then and if I find one I'll save it for you. I've been practicing a little flint knapping myself. This is my latest creation.

LAST EDITED ON Dec-21-06 AT 11:23AM (MST)[p]thank you bonepiler and longun. This knapping has turned into an obsesssion with me. I have rocks everywhere and we won't even get into the chippings! That's a pretty cool looking knife you got there longun. I haven't made a knife yet but here are a few of my "babies" I made from glass.

Nice work, Cookie2. Pretty cool. Bonepiler, you should trade him a moose shed for one of those. One of your babies for one of his babies. ;-)

Cookie-is this big enough for you? It's a Shiras and the diameter is 2 inches. If it is E-mail me your address and I'll mail it to you.

LAST EDITED ON Dec-25-06 AT 12:09PM (MST)[p]Hey i have two moose antlers, but one weighs 22pounds and has 14points. But i do got a small moose horn i am willing to sell. For pretty cheap. I will Send a picture as soon as I can.

Cookie,

If the antler longun sent does not work for you, let me know and I will see what I can come up with. Nice work on the glass arrowheads!! Nice knife longun!

Will do bonepiler. If you have any larger I will probably be able to use that as well. Well, come to think of it, I will probably be needeing all different sizes as the weight of the billet is relative to the size flakes you need to remove at the time so the further you get into the piece the smaller the billet required to shape it the way you want it to go. I don't know if longun's is going to be big enough for working very large pieces down or not but I'm sure it will work in some phase of the process. Thanks again to longunand you as well bonepiler. And to anyone else who would care to help a poor redneck out in supporting his habit!

Hey longun, I got your shed today and I gotta say it's way more than I expected. You have definitely made my day! Thanks alot, it's nice to know there are still people like you out there and it is a pleasure to know you.

I'm gonna send you those points longun, the only thing is that I'm working 5am to 5pm and can't get to the Post Office for a few days. As soon as I get a day off, they will be on their way.
