LAST EDITED ON Feb-05-15 AT 07:28AM (MST)[p]The one I have now gave up. It's just for home use and not for a lot of garbage. I have a septic tank so my wife is careful about what she puts down the drain.

Any recommendations? 1/2hp?

I'll be installing it myself, so I already know it's going to leak. x(

I don't know bout a garbage disposal, but I'm looking to get a tree chipper installed in my toilet. Thought it would help with some plunging issues.

Came to the right place sir, plenty of garbage here...........

Ask a real plumber and get an answer, and not some smartass remark.
Chances are their all made by a chinaman....opps sorry,Trading Partner.
If I recall the last one I replaced for someone was a 3/4hp.
She had alot of garbage issues....
I've always been of the school of thought the sewer/septics were for #'s 1&2,not the before products. Ask a septic guy.

hank, we have some qualified plumbers here! They've helped me in the past.

My septic tank was put in in 1975. It's never needed any maintenance at all. It's never even been pumped.

I like the way you think smitty:)

Eel, just did that. I stayed with the same brand that quit and it was easy to replace as everything matched up.

LAST EDITED ON Feb-05-15 AT 09:46AM (MST)[p]Eel, i put in a lot of 1/2 HP InSinkErator units and they seem fine to me. I'm no specialist by any means. 3/4 HP are maybe better, they don't have to work as hard... 1/2 should be fine.

If your 7/8" Rubber Air Gap hose from the Dishwasher, dumps into the side if disposal, make sure to get rid of the knock-out piece of plastic within in the hard plastic sleeve your hose connects to.

No matter which one that you might get, check to see if a pigtail is included. They don't always come with one, can be a pain in the rear.

OK! Great! Thanks very much! Joey, I saw that brand. The one I have is a Hot Point. It's so old.....

Steve, yeah, i'd get the Badger 5 unit, less than $100. out the door. Sometimes the hardest part is getting the old strainer off the sink and the new strainer with new putty on. I'd hate to say how fast i usually take to change them out, pretty fast, but then i've done a lot of them.

Joey, you need to move to Eureka, of I need to move to Chester. One or the other.:)

Thanks Bud!

That's the brand.
Sage is right about the pigtail.
I wound up getting whole new sink fitting too.It was all in one deal.
Had to put in outlet instead of box.

Don't Screw around with one of them little ole PISSCUTTER 1/2 HorsePower Disposers!

Get at Least a 1 Horsepower!

And here's why:

WOW! 1HP, I know bess probably knows what he's talkin about but I just replaced 1/2HP with a "upgrade" 3/4HP and the difference is notable, now the whole counter shakes like she's gonna fall apart! I would go with a 1/2HP if you're not planning on grinding up some burger and sending it down the pipe. But what do I know I'm NOT a Plumber.

If i were doing the finish plumbing of a really nice home with a big kitchen, granite counters, commercial appliances,.. then i'd probably install a 3/4 horse unit.

Often when you change out a old unit for a new one unless same-same, the thin wall drain plumbing under sink needs to be modified as well. Fun and games... :)

Steve,
You need to get one like Tim "The Tool Man" had on his hit TV program, He put his tree limbs down there and had them grind up just fine. So them body logs would have no problem.

I replaced ours along time ago when we bought this house and I too am on a septic system. All the cooking grease etc. goes into any old plastic jars we have empty and fill them up and duck tape the lids and put in garbage can for service to take care of in the land fill.

Ours has been replaced twice and have been 1/2 HP

ROOKIES!

If 1/2 a Horsepower is good!

Then 1 Horsepower is better!

I remember the Disposer that kilo mentioned on Tool Time!

Ya!

She had more Ponies than just a 1/2!:D

Test!
When Bobcat buys a truck, does he get?
a) a truck that gets good fuel mileage and economical to drive
b) a truck that gets both good mileage and has good Power
C) Screw the fuel Mileage, Bring on the Power Baby!! }>

Thanks for reminding me Eel. While we are on the subject my disposal started making a hell of a racket rattling like crazy the other night. The neighbor girl (small hands) came over and pulled this wingy looking dilly wopper out of it (metal). I think it is one of the wings cutters of sort. Dose this mean I need a new one or can it be fixed? I will look at it as soon as she leaves.

I'll bet Rut's Disposer needs attention/Fixed all the Time!:D

At a time like this a guy needs to expand his thinking.................

Try this model eel. The Eureka "Rotter To Pooter 120".

Septic system approved. No muss, no fuss, simple installation. And...........Sage likes them hams for Thanksgiving ;-), so you can trade out for to a new unit, once a year.

Comes in colors to match Mom's kitchen. All units come with an improved gardening fertilizer application system and a standard issue cultivator attachment.

I believe I'd steer clear of them hams lump! :D I do keep a small flock of chickens that get my table scraps in exchange for fresh eggs. Been workin out alright!

LAST EDITED ON Feb-05-15 AT 11:03PM (MST)[p]Rut, don't sound good if it's missing a cutter. I seen em work that way for a long time when in light use. I'd sure see how it works and keep a eye on it.

You can do surgery on some of them and maybe re-attach the cutter if you still have it but i'd be concerned. If it don't work right, you might best replace the unit.

2Lumpy, Yes, i do love a good Ham from time to time. We raised them for our pork chops until i was well into High school. When i was little, I recall being chased by the bastiges, mean SOB's they were, at least the ones we raised.

Chickens now, the chickens got all our fruit and vegetable scraps. They done good on them too! :) A little thrown Barley seed, a few grasshoppers, and a couple plates of kitchen scraps raised up a decent eating Bird.

GEEZUS!

I didn't say a 1 HP would take care of Un-Wanted KALI Pets!:D

We sell a lot of the ISE pro 750's . Its 3/4 horse stainless steel has a 5 year warranty. It's a better design then the old Badger 1's and 5's. But we sell a lot of those as well. The new line of InSinkerators is called the Evolution. They even have one for folks that are on septic systems.

Done. The guy at the hardware store said this Ace was made by Badger and was the exact same as the Badger 5. They never lie.

No runs, no drips, no errors.:), so far.

Joey

I wondered about that flex tube. The guy at the hardware store recommended it. It seems like a garbage trap to me.

It don't leak.

elkassassin, do you need a disposal installer? I would only charge $160. 8 hours @ $20/hr.:)
