Hunting in Idaho & Drawing a unit to hunt in Idaho

I would like to hunt in Idaho with my Dad and some family but I am unfamiliar with the way the Idaho Department of Fish and Game does thing as far as drawing your hunt choices. I know some of the basics that Idaho seems to be a pure luck drawing system so there are no preference points given if you don't draw. What units do I stand a good choice in drawing either Elk or Deer? Basically I am looking for some advice on where some good units are to try and draw a non residence elk or deer tag from? I live in Oregon but my family all live in Idaho. Any help would be appreciated

First thing to put in for hunts you have to buy your hunting license. Not sure what areas or hunts you want to put in for, guys around here aren't going to tell you what hunts they put in for cause they don't want anymore added competition.

As far as odds of drawing and how the draw works. The draws are completely random, no preference points, and I believe you have just as good a chance at drawing your 2nd choice as you do your 1st. Check out the controlled hunt harvest stats on the IDFG website and see what controlled hunts are high percentage kill hunts and go from there. Best of luck!

If you want to put in for a controlled tag here in Idaho you have just as good of a chance as all the residents until 10% of the alotted tags are given to nonresidents. When that happens your out of the draw and if your family puts in with you on the same app. they will be too, even if they are residents. As far as your 1st and 2nd choices you will never be drawn for your 2nd choice unless its an antlerless hunt.Theres just too many apps for that to happen. As far as what hunts you should put in for thats up to you and what fits your schedule.Just about all the controlled hunt for deer and elk give you a better than average chance at a better than average animal. However the open units do produce good animals you just have to pay your dues and invest alot of time and effort to find good areas.Check the F&G website out for odds in drawing and for success, that will help you out to get started.Once you do figure out where and when your going to hunt im sure alot of people on sites like this can help you out even more.Good luck and happy hunting.
