Went for a ride this past week and found the biggest shed of the year so far. Exceptional tops on this bull. Couldn't find the other side. May go for a ride on the ranch I found it on again this spring yet. Hope I can find it then. The shed wasn't the only thing I found that day as you will see further down. Hope you enjoy.

Later in the day I decided to ride over below Sofa Mountain near the Blood Indian timber limit through an old burn. I was looking for grizzly tracks to photograph in the fresh snow. Ended up finding some real nice ones with the grizzly still standing in them. Got a couple of pictures through my horses ears when I first spotted him at 70 or 80 yards and then he came down off the little hump he was on to introduce himself. I let him get to about 40 yards and decided I better try and move out of his way as best I could. It was pretty much up to him if things were going to go bad because it was real tight quaters with a lot of dead fall and I couldn't have put much room between me and him and me very fast. I was glad I was riding a good broke horse or I might have got in a wreck. He finally decided to move off so I followed him for a ways and got a few more shots. Any how thought you might like to see the photos.

Unreal pictures, thanks for sharing them! You live in some amazing country.

Nice grizwald. Looks like there's still some snow on the grass beyond the mountains!

That is a huge shed Rod. Was the 5th broken? Luck with the match. Very cool bear pics. I'll bet that got tense for a bit.

Rod,
Fantastic Pics. Love the shed but the grizz pics are GREAT! Haven't seen any up and moving about this year yet, but sure it will be any day know. Been working in a fly camp where they have been dropping moose carcus' only a km away for a wolf study. Been thinking that we'll have a Grizz in camp pretty soon.

I am very glad we don't have those big brown things down here in Ore-gone. I know I wouldn't be shed hunting as much if there were!!! I agree, you have some Cahoonas.

Nice pics! Can't believe you held the camera steady for the griz shot.........

Thats insane..your extremly brave for being that close. What a great looking shed as well. I wish you luck on finding the match.

Love the pics of the bear with the horses ears in them. I can't decide if I'm gonna move to your neck of the woods or littlefoots stompin' grounds. Thanks for posting. fatrooster.

That's a really cool shed! How close were you to that grizz? ...that woulda made my heart pump a little faster.

An outstanding piece of bone, for sure!! The griz and scenery just adds to the quality of your photos!! That bruin was probably hungry, you and your trusty steed showed great nerve!!!

Great pics as always Rod, you must be about the luckiest guy in the world to be out in that kind of country as much as you are and to find the number and size of sheds you find, and to do it all from the back of some great looking horses.

Outstanding...if it had been me though, there wouldn't have been any bear pics. Between me screamin like a little girl and sh*ttin myself..the bear wouldn't have come close enough!!

Hoofsandhorns,

Again, Terrific Photos.

What an adventure. One question.

What's the cowboy carrying on his hip? 45?

What is the reaction of a grizz in spring time with a easy meal only 40-80 yards away?

From your experience where you safe or lucky? What are bears natural reaction? You mentioned you were looking for grizzly tracks... so you knew encounters were probable. Are bears at this time or other time really not a threat?

Or did we just witness with you a lucky, very lucky encounter, that could have gone bad?

Love to hear your comments.

Keep the bear and shed photos coming. Love em all.
