I have never shed hunted before, but think it would be a blast. I also think it would help with the after hunt blues.
I was hoping there would be a "how to shed hunt" in the article section but didnt find one.
I was hoping to draw on some of the wisdom of you pro shed hunters. Where to look? What time of year? What equiptment if any do I need? How many sheds should an average days worth of hunting yield? Do I need to treat the antlers with anything once I acquire some? Are there any laws I need to know about while shed hunting?
I live in Utah near Salt Lake City so I will be looking for Mule deer.
Any information would be appreciated. Thanks 1shot.

Well, I am no "pro shed hunter" but may be able to help. In SLC or Utah for that matter, Most bucks shed during the end of jan thru the month of feb. Obviously that is the "prime time" to look for sheds. Extreme caution must be used however due to the fact that these animals are under hughe stress this time of year. So DONT push the animals if you are shed hunting.

To find a place to shed hunt, look for deer during the winter months to find out where they winter. A good starting point for you would be the lowhills east of SLC all the way to Utah County. Look for areas with sage brush. I would suggest you start your search in dec by glassing in the early morning. Once you find the deer, watch them until they have shed and you will know where to look for sheds.

Hope this helps.

The number of sheds you find is derectly related to the number fo boots you ware the soles off of. Look for the steepest, country you can find and start walking.

I went on my first shed hunt last year. A guy told me to look in the bottoms of ravines/draws and by fence lines. I looked all over and either by good advice or coincidence, this is where I found them. The claim by this guy was when the animals jump across a bottom or a fence the horns are more likely to fall off then. Who knows?
