I got a new bow this year for christmas and have been shooting alot and was wondering on how i should hunt. Either go with Spot and Stalk or sit at a water hole. THANKS for the Help
That is a pretty wide spread question. You may want to narrow it down, such as what species, what state, early or late season, mountains, hills, plaines, or woods, public or private. Those are all factors as to what the best ansewer would be. But seeing that you are a biginner I'd say water holes. Shoot your bow as much as possable and practice judging distances. Good luck!
Problem I have with water holes, atleast where I hunt, is that the animals visit them well after dark. They are smart and don't go there during the day time. Every place is different and has it's own circumstances and it takes time to learn the animals you are hunting. I've been hunting one small area for elk for 5 years straight and learn am still learning.
I am hunting mule deer in nevada and i have the Junior tag so i can hunt Archery Muzz and Rifle but would really like to harvest a deer with my bow (which i know is really tuff) were the deer live are on the top of the mountain above the timberline most the time for archery so i was thinking about spot and stalk but with the Schell rock i just don't know how.
The best way to learn is through trial and error. I've been bowhunting since I was twelve and have never put my bow down. I was 20 years old before killing my first buck, a spike and 23 before killing my first nice buck about a 150 gross 4x5. It's tough and takes a lot of time learning an area. If I were you, I would try to hunt one area or terrain and concentrate on learning how to effectively hunting it. It may take years to learn but persistence will pay off. I've always wanted to hunt the above timberline country for muleys like you've described but don't have much of any in Oregon. Good luck and if you have any more questions, fire away.
Thanks for the help i have helped my friend bow hunt but not very seriously. I can't wait for this august to go huntin but i will probley do that because last year i was chasin a good 185"-190" Muley with my muzz and with my rifle and ended kill one of his buddy's that was 23" 150 Class buck.
Well chris,
Hopefully i'll draw Archery Deer this year up there, if you need some help you know i've been hunting long enough to have tried just about every trial and error there is for bow hunting
Depends on where you are hunting. The dry states almost make it manditory to hunt over waterholes, then again the "big wide open" mandates the spot and stalk. It also depends on what species you are trying to arrow. Out here you can almost walk up on the wild pigs, 10 yards or so...
I tend to use a combo of all the techniques to fit the exact situation.
Cass you were the first person i would go to but i never talk to ya so i was just seein, ya i know you have had your shares of misses but i will get in touch if i draw.
I say just sit back and look for on off in the distance and when you find a big old boy watch him for a little bit and then go find his path he always travels and just wait for him it always works for me unless i miss like always.
And as far as the deer sign make sure your off the road.
Alright thanks for the help i will probley go with spot and stalk and maybe a little water sittin but thanks for the replies and i think those deer signs are harder to get than ya think.
Chris
With the amount of water that Ely will be getting I believe before august, the water situation will not be a problem. Sitting by water would probably not be your best choice. Get up high, set up that new spotting scope and just glass for probably the first 2 days of the hunt. Find out what the deer are doing. You have to understand that most of the time in nevada during the early archery hunt the deer aren't territorial, they wander. So if you sit and watch for the first few days you can find out where the deer are bedding during the day and go after them. That's the best bet. I will send you a pair of Sneekee feat I have down here before the hunt, you strap them to your boots and they make you literally quiet when you hike.
