How keep points with 2nd choice?

I understand that you keep your points as long as you don't draw your "first choice". Does the system allow you to put in for a point as your first choice and an easy to draw unit as your second choice OR do you have to put in for a hard to draw unit for your first choice and hope that you don't draw.
