How high would you say is the highest you have ever found an elk shed? My usual shed hunting spot is somewhere around 4000ft, which i think is sorta high (getting up that high can ran into snow). But today i was bear hunting at 6000ft and i thought there was no way in hell that there could be sheds, but low and behold i found a fresh 6 point. So at the moment i dont know if thats just a fluke or if thats there shedding ground(never been to this spot before). Heard that its snowed in till early May.

My family owns a cabin in southern Utah, and when the snow melts off early and the elk get back up to the high country we will
find sheds in the lower elevation area's around our cabin. Rarely will I find a shed at higher elevation than our cabin, but two years ago on the elk hunt I found a 6 point shed at aprox. 9500 feet.
I know that this must sound ridiculious but the cabin sits at
9101 ft. and I was quite a bit higher up than the cabin.

oregonbone...my hunting partner finds elk sheds up to about 6500' in the John Day area. He found buck sheds this year up at 6000' because there wasn't much snow, so they stayed high most the winter.

We regularly find sheds between 5000 and 6000 feet during archery season.

Finding many bear's?

bobby, how big was it.

I havent been out for a while, all of the moisture has the grass growing at an incredible rate!

LAST EDITED ON May-22-05 AT 02:38PM (MST)[p]It was an alright 6 point. It had a 17 inch G-3, but the other points werent very big(average lengths). Give the bull a couple years and hes gonna be BIG!

I commonly find elk sheds at 9,000'. I occasionally find elk sheds at nearly 10,000'. I have seen elk sheds on the tundra in Rocky Mountain National Park at 12,000'. Near my home, I wouldn't be surprised if a bull dropped one side at 7000' and then dropped the other side a few hours later at 10,000'. Sure makes it tough to find elk sheds.

I guess that its not uncommon to find them this high. Here in Oregon i think they drop a little lower maybe.

I think the poor winter, or lack thereof, here in Oregon moved the elk high during shed season....I went to my honey hole and got skunked. I imagine you'll find sheds in places you haven't before.
