How far from the road have you killed animals?

I wonder what the average distance from the road animals are harvested while bowhunting. I personally have shot one cow elk within 1/2 mile of the road. The other elk have been 2 miles or more. What about you guys?

I shot a cow 2 yrs ago 100 yds from my truck. Fell asleep around 4 am and got out to go and cow called and she ran in to me within 35 yds. I also had a good bull with cows 200 yds from camp last year. Also could have killed some cows about 2 miles in. Just go for bulls way off the road.LOL Make it worth shooting back in there.

The farthest I've killed a bull from the road is 3 miles. I was by myself but luckily it was almost all downhill. Last years bull was killed 300 yards from the road and again all downhill. I sure love the new 4-wheeler restriction in Idaho.

The three elk that I've arrowed have expired 40 yards, 100 yards and about 400 yards from the nearest road. Last season's rifle elk died 10 yards from a 2-track. But then again, in northern Arizona, it's hard to walk 1/2 mile and not cross a road or old 2-track. Having a high road density seems only to be a blessing when the elk is down.

I might have the "closest" Parked the jeep on a old logging road started hiking in at about 40 yrds buck stands up gave me time to nock an arrow and shoot and he took off ruuning and droped 10 feet from jeep "shortest drag I ever had"

I spotted a three point muley from the truck one afternoon while driving to my hunting spot. I exited the truck, knocked an arrow and shot the deer. It took about three steps, and then rolled down the hill right into the side of my truck. The body work to the truck cost me more than the tag, license, and archery permit would have tripled. Should was good eating though.

All the elk I have shot have been 2 miles + from the road. Several of the deer I have killed have been close to roads however. Here in Utah the elk dive into the ugly stuff pretty early in the hunt and you have to go dig em out! Luckily my camp helps pack out each animal killed so it isn't so bad. Good luck to you all!

I have killed four bull elk. closest was 2 ile drag. others were 5 and 6 and 6.5 miles by backpack. After dragging the first spike two miles, the next was quartered. and the next two have been boned. I will not carry out bone again. three-four trips spike, four-five trips raghorn, five-six trips big bull.

This year I hope to have less than a three mile hike to nearest road, and hope to require 6 trips to do it.

I have harvested 2 does with my bow and one was from acroos a 2 track road and the other was from the side of one at her 30yrds away.

I have only harvested two elk (1 cow and 1 nice bull). Both were taken no closer than three miles from the nearest road (general access). The cow was shot about one mile from an active mine road (not accessible to the general public). The bull was three miles in. Deer, of course, are a different story, although mature bucks (trophy size), seem to be similar to elk. Basically, you got to get off the beaten path for the big boys. I prefer to hike with my gear and camp on my back.

Most of the animals I've been fortunate enough to arrow have been away from roads, requiring me to bone & backpack them out. There are some exceptions (Northern Arizona), but hiking 2-4 miles in is generally the norm for me.

My brothers' mother was in town the other day (my half brother) and she shot at an elk that was 175 yards of a dirt road. well she shot three times and still didn't hit it. so the game and fish pulled up..............she should have been 40 feet off the road. she was fined and able to hunt. on the other hand I like to get away from the road, half a mile plus....and most of the time it's always plus...

i have been extremly lucky, i killed a cow elk in unit 1 while sitting a heavily used water tank on a semi-heavily used dirt road she was 50 yards from me and about 75 yards from the truck drove right to her, my dad, my grandpa, myself, my mom and my winch helped us load her in the back of the truck she was a big ole one. i think the farthest packs i have had were my 2 coues, one was about 3/4 of a mile up hill around a hill, the other was about 1/2 a mile but it was all down hill. on the second one, i felt bad for my dad cause not only did he have to walk to us from camp after we had 2 down, but he had to carry 2 sets of docters, 2 tripods, 2 rifles, 2 backpacks, and not only does that get heavy, but it is awkard to carry. i only had to carry about 80 pounds maybe 90 pounds of deer :)
