How are deer counts conducted in Utah?

I've never had any faith in the numbers that are given for the deer heard numbers in Utah. I have heard a lot of things on how they come up with these numbers. Right know in other threads numbers are being thrown out about the deer herd again.

So my question is... How does Utah come up with these numbers? Do other states have different methods? Is there another practical method that could me implimented?

Nebo stated that a deer herd went from 22k to 11k in one year because they tried a different count method. How are we making sound decisions if the counts are not even in the ball park? There is one unit that should probably be shut down, but I wouldn't be surprised if someone has some data showing that it's just fine.:)

Its a guess there's no way to see every deer.

LAST EDITED ON Oct-07-10 AT 06:12PM (MST)[p]In California they figure out how much money they want, divide that by the price of a tag, and multiply that times 100. That's how many deer they have. They call it sustained yield. It should be called sustained income.
