Wonder if nv_hunter aka honest abe has an alibi???..

SPANISH FORK ? Three domesticated elk were killed and then stolen from an enclosed ranch in Spanish Fork Canyon this summer, and police are seeking to identify the culprits, the Utah County Sheriff's Office said Wednesday.

The elk were shot and then taken from a private ranch near U.S. 6 on Aug. 15, the first day of elk hunt season in Utah, said Utah County Sheriff's detective Jeff Robinson. The animals were quartered and then pulled through the gaps of a 10-foot-high locked cattle gate near the highway, Robinson said.

"There was blood and hair all over the gate," he said.

The area was clearly marked as a private ranch, according to Robinson.

"Most hunters do go out of their way to be honorable. ? This just seems blatant to me," he said. "There's not much sport in ? just shooting (domestic) elk and taking them."

The elk were worth about $5,000 each, and the ranch owner planned to use them for future elk raising. No physical evidence collected at the scene gives police an idea of who is responsible, Robinson said. Investigators don't believe the elk were taken as part of a personal feud.

Robinson said it's likely not a coincidence that the elk were stolen on the first day of the hunting season, calling it a matter of opportunity.

"It's an easy cover, basically," he said. "There were many elk taken out of that (larger) area during that time and so it's not hard for them to drive out, while otherwise they may have been questioned."

The detective is seeking information from anybody who was in Spanish Fork Canyon on Aug. 15 or noticed something unusual about an acquaintance's elk hunt. Anyone with information related to the case is asked to call Robinson at 801-851-4029.

Are they sure this was a private ranch? It could have been a Utard who set up a dozen trail cams and a tree stand who claims it's a private elk herd.
