High country mule deer

I generally hunt unit 39, but I am looking into hunting higher country next year in hope of taking a big buck. Maybe unit 43, 27, or maybe even stay with 39. I don't know, so I am looking for some help. I have been studying maps of different areas, but I have no idea where to start. If anyone can lead me in a general direction so I have a starting point that would be great. There is so much country out there, I don't have enough time or money to scout all of these areas. Obviously I am not asking for your honey hole, just a general area. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Feel free to send me a PM.

Unit 39 has some of the highest contry in the state. The peaks to the east are the border of 43. Both units will hold good bucks. me and most of my friends hunt unit 39 so i cant really start giving areas out but if you have any specific questions, let me know and ill do my best to answer them.

yep, just about everybody had a tougher time this year. i didnt get to hunt the high country this year because i was on a moose hunt during the time i would usually be there.

my friends had some success high but did notice a lack of quality bucks this year. that seemed to be the case with most all hunters this year that i hear of. ill be interested to see what is on the winter ground in a month or so.

i never found a buck i wanted to shoot this year. ill be heading out tomorrow for archery again.

I'll be out there for one last hunt as well. When I was hunting last week,I saw three groups of does with large forkies instead of big bucks, so the number of big bucks is definately down.

Good luck tomorrow.

orion, I just posted on the mule deer site but noticed you all are talking about going on the late archery hunt. My brother and I were thinking of going tues. and wed. to 55 for the first time. Does anyone mind sharing some info on what they are seeing, or if they are seeing much? It is a 2 1\2 hour drive and if not much os going on we will finish siding my house while the weather is good and try to go before the hunt ends. Maybe a storm will come in later and make for good hunting and bad siding weather. Any help would be great. Thanks in advance. Layne

thanks for getting back to me. I am still not sure whether we will go this week or next, but I will let you know how good it is. Layne

never saw a 4 point. saw 2 wounded bucks, and tried to do the right thing and fill the tag on those. Unsuccessful tho.

its a little frightening not seeing a 4 pt on november 30th. i only hunted a 1/2 day but usually there are several in there. i hope its just the weather.

we'll see in a few weeks. we'll go out and check the winter range and see whats out there.

let me know how 55 goes.

I hunted 39 this year. I have never been to 55, but would like to in the future.

So did the big bucks ever show up now that the snow has come? I hunted 39 the last week of rifle and struggled to find bucks. Did get a small 4 point and felt lucky to get him. THanks nwhunter

I hunted during the late archery and saw a lot more deer, but not many big bucks. I think we still needed a little more snow at the time, but I am sure they are down now.
