Hghway between Garden Valley/Lowman

Has anyone deer hunted off the highway between Garden Valley to Lowman? I was thinking of parking and hiking straight to the top, about 2,000 feet up, somewhere around the Deadwood turn off. As far as distance north of the highway we are talking a mile or less.

Any experiences? Thanks in advance.

There are deer up there. Mulies and Whitetails both. I say go for it. May find yourself a nice little spot up there.

I went upstream 1.5 miles past the Deadwood turnoff. Pulled over north of the highway in a nice pullout at the bottom of a big draw. Spent 2.5 hours hiking up almost 2000 feet of elevation. Made a shelter, woke up at 6 am and hiked to the top. I saw zero deer and 6 elk plus one big bear. It sucked to say the least. I glassed and glassed for deer, not one. It appeared to be really good after some snow starts accumulating up higher.

It seems to me that there are areas that look like they would hold deer but don't. Where I elk hunt we see very few deer, though when we do they are as likely to be a decent buck, but the area holds lots of elk. I know just 3 miles to the south the deer are in pretty strong. Even the ranch below where we hunt which is typical low land sage with plenty of the giant sage and bitterbrush deer like, doesn't hold many. So maybe you need to move around a bit, especially this next week after some weather. Maybe others will disagree, but this is my opinion.

This was just a ridge I had been looking at for some time on Google Earth and I thought I'd try out for a week day hunt. My actual hunting ground is quite nice and much further south. I've been seeing generally 30-40 deer a day with 5-7 bucks in my normal spot.

Always good to see new country.
