Guess the Age (Pictures)

This year me, my dad, and my daughter had some luck hunting deer. I collected the teeth from each of the deer we harvested to send in for tooth cementum aging and I got the age results back yesterday. It was interesting and I will likely continue to do it each year. First off how accurate do you think tooth cementum aging is? Second off I thought it would be fun to see what everyone’s thoughts are on the age of the bucks.
Buck #1 is 25 1/2” wide scores 169.
Buck #2 is 21” wide scores 145.
Buck #3 is 27 1/2” wide scores 147.
Buck #4 is 25 1/2” wide scores 219 if I scored it right. First deer that I was not sure how to score. ?

I thought this could be a fun thread so please try to keep it that way and not debate my scores. My tape is not rubber and I did my best but I’m not an official B&C scorer.

What is your opinion and guesses?

I will post the ages I received in the report in a week or so.

I'm gonna say 4, 3, 5, 4. Those freak bucks are hard to guess an age on just because they don't get the typical looks of an older deer.

Good try, 2 out of 4. The freaks are hard, one will surprise everyone. To be fair I only got 2 out of 4 on my guess before I got the results and I had all the pieces to the puzzle, not just a picture. I was close on the other two but they both surprised me in different ways. The teeth wear was in order of the youngest to oldest comparative to the age in the report.

I wish I would have taken pictures of the teeth as well to include in the guessing game. Maybe I will add that to the game next time if we have any luck in 2022. Thanks for the fun so far. A few of the 2 out of 4 guesses had the age order right. By the way this was not a normal year for my family. We had plenty of luck come our way this year.

I killed a bull elk this year and I’m waiting on the age on it as well. My guess is 6 years old on it so it will be interesting to see what the report says.

I do. I had the teeth cut and aged. From my understanding it is the most accurate way to age animals. I will post the report in a week or so.

The second biggest bull ever shot in Montana was tooth aged at 4.5. He scored 430. I listened to the hunters story on a podcast somewhere. He had been hunting this area for many years and said the feed in 2016 was just incredible compared to anything he had seen before. Food for thought if you really trust tooth data.

After looking at the last pic more his body and face are certainly small. Your guess of 2 could be very well correct Jake.

We have a winner!?

In my normal thinking mind it does not make sense but everything about this deer but his rack said that he was very young. Small body, small head, small feet, prefect fresh long sharp teeth.

My guesses before I got my report was 4,3,6,4. I wanted to say 3 on the big freak buck but with the size of his rack I just could not put him that low.

I used Matson’s Laboratory, LLC out of Montana. I will post a picture of the report with all the information.

Thank you to all for playing along. It was fun. This social media stuff is a bit out of my comfort zone but I have enjoyed MM for many years so I figured I would try to add to the site instead of just reading about everyone else’s fun topics.

What got me interested in animal aging and what lead me to Matson’s Laboratory was a old bull elk I killed on a Utah general muzzleloader elk hunt on public land back in 2014. I had to know how long that bull had eluded hunters in a high pressured public land general area setting. That bull was 12 years old. I liked having the answer instead of always wondering how old he was.

This buck in my avatar ( 240") was tooth aged at 4.5. He was shot in an area near agriculture, very limited tags, and no migration. The right conditions can really help out.

Were the two velvet bucks cactus bucks- any apparent abnormalities with body physiology? I photographed a small buck this year that looked normal, When I looked at the picture, he had a long spike beam right side along with his normal mb. I also saw him later during the rut with scraped antlers.

It is hard to believe based on the size of his antlers. He had every indication of being a young buck, small body, small head, small feet and long fresh sharp teeth. His age listed in the report has surprised everyone.

You know where I killed the 7 year old and his front aging teeth were little nubs and he had a big body that was noticeable bigger that the other mature bucks that he was with. You could tell he was a older buck and I liked him better than the higher scoring buck that was in the group so he got the trigger pull. I am hoping that the higher scoring buck made it through the season, he looked like he could be something special in a few years.

Both were small bodied deer.

The drop tine buck only had one very small nut and no other abnormalities. We did not have any history with this buck so I am not sure if he cast his antlers like normal bucks. We found him opening day and could not get it done so we came back a few days later and got lucky.

The big multi beamed buck we had a slight history with enough to know that he had cast his antlers from the previous year and grow a new set. I seen a picture of him 22 days before my dad got him and it was amazing the amount of growth he put on in those 22 days. Some of his points looked and felt like they may have had a little bit of growth left in them had he had the time to finish out. This buck had two very small nuts and his front shoulders were very thin without much muscle mass. Everything else looked normal.

Both are unique in their own ways.

Your buck is a giant. Mass is my favorite characteristic of antlers. I am guessing no one would have guessed your 240” buck at 4 years old either. Some bucks must just have all the right factors to explode.

This was such a great exercise! My 24" 143" buck this year was 6.5 and it really opened my eyes to how older deer don't always put on the mass or tine length. Thanks for posting!
