No single guys allowed like Michael Jackson or Elvis. Has to be a band.

Couple of my favorites:
Van Halen
Eagles
Aerosmith

Worldwide I don't think the American bands stand up to the Rolling Stones, Beatles or Zeppelin though.

living through the prime hair band era I gotta vote Motley Crue and Guns n Roses, Nirvana also gets an honorable mention.
