I live in Great Falls. There are some good wintering grounds for elk on some of the wildlife management areas nearby, like the Sun River Game Range and the Beartooth Wildlife Management Area. They open May 15. I am not positive, but I believe they may have put restrictions in place this year on the number of sheds you can pick up on the WMAs. It can be a circus on some of those the day they open. Because of the terrain, we don't seem to have traditional wintering grounds for our deer herds in the area. They typically don't have to move too much to winter, except along the Rocky Mountain front. We have good numbers of both mule deer and whitetail and I tend to find a lot more whitetail bone than mulies, mainly in creek bottoms on private land. There is a ton of game here, but it is not managed for quality, so finding really good horns can be tough.
