Got a new bow.

Got me a Matthews Drenalin today and shot it at the archery shop, which was the first time I'd ever shot a bow, and I think I fell in love with a new hobby. I expected arm shock, having a hard time holding on the target, arm fatigue from pulling and holding back, and a hard time grouping arrows. Boy was I ever wrong. The bow was so smooth and quiet and shooting consistent groups (at 20 yards I should add) was not as hard as I expected. On the other hand, I didn't know that there was so much involved in arrow selection, cam selection, sizing up the bow to a particular person, site selection, arrow rest selection, blah blah blah! And I realize that I've barely touched the tip of the iceburhg. And we haven't even talked about hunting with a bow. I've always had the utmost respect for bowhunters and my favorite hunting videos are about bow hunters and now I see how it can be addicting. I'd be glad to hear any suggestions or comments to help me get started on my way into archery hunting. fatrooster, aka Drew Edwards.

Drew, congratulations, that's a nice bow! I just bought my first compound bow a few days ago. I ended up with a Diamond Black Ice. You're right, all the choices make your head spin. I'm looking forward to jumping in head first and learning as I go. Good shooting to you!

Slider, thanks for the references to the archery sites, I will be sure to visit them.
firstcous, right now I'm set at 62 #'s. And yes I'm sure your right about trying to keep groups at 50 yards ha ha. But I'm excited to take the challenge.
eelgrass, good shootin' to you too and congrats on YOUR first bow. I think this is gonna be fun!
Thanks for the well wishes guys. fatrooster.

Rooster.....CONGRATS! Man I want that bow! :)
Best advice is get set up soon. Get your bow fine tuned, sighted in and then practice at least a couple times a week. You'll get hooked just like I did after the first day! LOL
50 yard groups are not hard to get tight at all. Especially with that bow! I'm sighted to 60 with a much lower grade bow and keep 6 inch max groups. I've seen guys at the range keeping 3-4 inch groups consistently at 70!
Start at the 20 yard mark and work your way up from there. Before long, you'll be like the guys at the range shooting 100 yards .....and scoring!
Make sure to have an experienced archer help you with proper shooting form right off the bat. Bad habits are hard to break and to start off right gives you a HUGE advantage.
If you don't know anyone, check out the links on.....I think eastmans.com for the helpful hint videos they have. Shows proper form, releasing, etc.

Best advice I have is have fun. Surround yourself with other archers by joining your local state organization and network with more experienced guys/gals. Join a 3D league and remember, practice makes perfect. Good luck and welcome to the best type of hunting in the world.
