Im am going to be archery hunting for elk this year and wanted to learn to call to use a diaphram mouth call. Whats a good one?

LAST EDITED ON Feb-06-05 AT 10:17AM (MST)[p]I also agree with the Primos. I have found the "Ivory Pallet" to be one of the easier calls to use. If you are just starting I would recommend that you stay away from the calls that are made to sound like a domminant bull. They have a stiffer latex and are much harder to use. Myself and all of my hunting partners prefer the softer latex calls.

Diaphram calls also need to fit the individuals mouth, you may need to try a few different brands to find the one that fits most comfortable.

PS if you are gaging while trying to call don't give up, with a little persistance that reflex can be overcome. I am speaking from experience.

man all i can say is hochie mama by primo's the comma running this past year we had two bulls come in so quick no one had time to draw and damn near run my brother over wow!!! i know you wanted reed info but this will round your calling out. and yes i agree with the ivory pallet comment very easy to use. but on the other hand the hyper lip is my choice it really p!ss' of a full rutting bull!!!

LAST EDITED ON Feb-06-05 AT 07:00PM (MST)[p]Thanks for the info. I already had the hoochie mama and I picked up the ivory pallet today. I have used the hoochie mama when elk hunting and it deffinately gets their attention. I've got the cow call down on the ivory pallet, but the bugle is gonna take some more practice. Are the primos elk calling videos any good?

chevy; yes they have good info in them for southern boy's they know they're chit!!!! where are you planning on elk hunting at?

Primos???? Why not a Carlton call???Everyone knows that wayne carlton was the man who thought of using a turkey reed to call elk. But more seriously, try many calls and see which one you like. Everybody has a different size and shape of palate and not all reeds fit as well or are as durable.

If Carlton made a reed call that would hold up and not stretch out then i would use them but they don't so i use Primos. I would much rather give my money to a Colorado boy, cuz his calls work good, but if your planning on hunting more than one day then you better buy something else or take a truckload of Carltons.

I've tried many and I prefer diaphram calls by Larry D. Jones. Good quality, awesome sound, and a great reputation from man who stands behind his products. JMO

I prefer diaphram calls by Carlton. Unfortunately they don't last that long. But I go packing plenty. This in conjunction with the Primos bugle and the HOOOOCHIE MAMA can really work wonders on elk.

For callin them in I'd say get a tube type...

I stopped a bull on a dead run with a simple whistle from my mouth. HULLINPHX can back this up, he was there. Had a nice Bull run across my path behind some trees, I imitated a generic cow call and he stopped in his tracks.

I could have sworn I replied to this post...but its not here.

I use a barrage of Wayne Carlton's Tube calls and the estrus squeeze me. I am thinking of picking up the hot lips and a bugle by Primos though.

I use the primo's palate plate calls. ivory, sentry and the other one. I couple that with the grunt tube off the Terminator and I have had real good success with them. I also have the hyper lip with tone converter and hear people have had success with the double hyper lip.

I don't rely on the hoochie momma too much anymore, I have seen or heard rather too many people walking through the forest pushing the hoochie mamma while walking hoping they can get an response.

There is an art to calling in elk and that wasn't it. IMO.

I hate to admit it but the Hoochie Mama does work. I think it sounds awful, you can almost always recognize it when you here it. It is also a problem if you are hunting alone. but it does for some unknown reason get the bulls excited.

All that said I would still say keep it in your pack and put a diaphram in your mouth, especially if you are alone. Nothing more discouraging than a bull coming in quick or quiet and you have your hoochie mama in your hand istead of your bow.

True true it dose sound kind of weird. yea you right if your alone use the diafram or if your one of the unlucky ones that cant use it go for a small reed call that dosent take any use of the hands
Muley Man!

I tie the hoochie momma to one of my belt loops it keeps it out of the way and combined with a diaphragm call you can sound like a herd of elk. Fighting cow call and the lonesome elk call are in my pack as well and both have been successful.

Chevy:

Saw you live up in Washington (that's GOT to be a whole lot different than hunting in the heat down here in Arizona!).

You've figured out one of the most important things in early season elk hunting --- it's VITAL to have a diaphragm call in your mouth when up close and personal with elk! I agree with many others who use the Primos Palate Plate diaphragm calls; easy to learn and use with realistic sound (they're awfully hard to beat).

You also might want to find the audio CD "Extreme Elk Calling" Steve Chappell put together last year. If you want to learn some great tips and techniques, you'll get it from Steve's CD (includes in-the-field examples/explanations) ...
