So, I congratulated a close friend, via text, on drawing an antlerless elk AND cow moose tag.
He called me back and said he’s really looking forward to the moose meat but wanted to mentor my grandson on the hunt itself!
(As a few of you know, my son was killed in an extreme hiking fall 5 years and 12 days ago).
What a generous offer! I called my grandson who excitedly said “yes” but I told him to make sure it’s okay with his mom. It was and we are officially hunting Wasatch West for antlerless moose with my long-time friend and grandson!
Unbelievable!
Keep us in mind as y’all are out scouting, hiking, chasing elk or bull moose and reach out with cow sightings if you feel like helping out.
I’m pretty sure we can find one since we live right here but someone out there might want to be a part of this awesome process too.
Good hunting!

Very cool of your friend.

Based on your MM personality and goodwill history, I’m not at all surprised you have a friend willing to mentor your Grandson. And with a Grandpa like Zeke, I have little doubt it will be a Once In A Life Time moose hunt. Wish all three of you the very best experience the tag can offer.

A great friend and neighbor mentored the Grandson of another neighbor, two years ago, on the Fish Lake. Twenty-two out of State preference points. Half the community came along and it was an experience no one that was there will ever forget.

That is awesome and very generous of your friend! I hope your grandson has an amazing experience. I am sure your son will also play a part in some way with the hunt.

I will keep my eyes out for a cow for you all.

That is absolutely awesome...can't wait to hear all the details as it develops, congrats!!!

so nice to hear a feel good story these days...thanks for sharing and also looking forward to the story of the adventure. Good Luck to you, your Grandson and everyone else involved!

That’s awesome! So glad to hear some good in the hunting community with what feels like more separation in the community then ever. Hope to see some post about this

Yep Zeke, pay it forward and it always comes back. You and your grandson will make some awesome memories this fall. Zach will be right there for the ride and smiling down. 2 of my sons will be in that unit helping a fiance and another a brother-in-law on archery and rifle deer and will keep an eye out for you. Keep in touch and enjoy.

His smile says it all.
One shot through the heart with the man-bun rifle loaded with 127 LR Barnes bullets. Ya, the 6.5 Creedmoor won’t kill. Haha.
We had a wonderful experience and we were able to see moose, elk, deer, mountain goats, bighorn sheep, turkeys and grouse. Awesome trips!
Ended the hunt on the west face of Timp and luckily the pack out wasn’t bad because of the young help we had.
Thanks for all the words of encouragement!

Zeke

You’ve inspired me Zeke. I’ve got a fair bunch of antlerless moose points built up in Ut. I was never sure why I was doing that……. now I know. If another antlerless tag shows up, I’ll be applying and mentoring a youngster.

Congrats, start to finish.

The kid is fired up!

I mentioned, during his moose hunt, that I have a cow elk tag and asked if he wanted to go hunt in November/December.

His mom said it's fine so it looks like he'll be using the man-bun rifle again if we have a little luck!

Thanks again, you guys, for the support and encouraging words.

Zeke

PS: To commemorate the occasion, I had a friend and custom knife maker throw a little something together for my grandson. My wife and I presented it to him the eve of the hunt.
He loves it and made the first cut. Gramps then took over to give a little instruction.

We all knew you would teach him right Buddy.

Somehow I missed this thread. What a great experience. Hope when I have grandkids I can take them hunting. Congratulations to everyone involved.

Karma is alive and well!!!

My friend who mentored my grandson with his moose tag just shot a big heavy “5” bull elk on the general season hunt! He usually does well on the elk but this feels special to me.

I’ll ask him if he’ll let me post the pic of his heavy bull. It might be a few days since he’s still out hunting with his friend.

So cool that this happened to him!

Zeke

This is amazing! Sorry I missed it earlier buddy. Such a cool experience for all of you. It’s nice to know there are still people in this world willing to go above and beyond to help others. To whoever mentored the tag to Zeke’s grandson THANK YOU AND HUGE RESPECT. Such a generous and cool thing to do especially for a deserving young man.
Awesome hunt and Congrats!

Very cool. Thanks for sharing this story.

One question on the tag. How dis the tag get moved from a friend who drew it to your grandson? I did know Utah allowed transfer of drawn tags.

Basically anyone can mentor their tag with consent. The DWR will give a consent form for the parent or legal guardian to sign, then the tag holder can return it to a division office (along with a $10 fee of course) and you’re all set.

18 year old age limit, isn’t there?

An adult can mentor someone under 18 (I believe that's the age). Tag holder has to be there for the hunt. A mentor tag must be purchased with both party's info on it.
So you're correct, technically the tag isn't transferred.
I've mentored grandkids on Utah deer hunts before. Pretty cool if they want to hunt and don't have a tag but I do and want to share.

You beat me to it Mr Shadow.
You're totally correct and it's easily done with parent or guardian signed permission.

I am extremely vocal about my frustrations with Utah’s Department of Natual Resourses. The mentor program is a wonderful concept and a huge thank you to the Utah Wildlife Board…….. that added it to Utah’s rules/regulations.

I started a Dedicated Hunter tag again this year. Took 5 years to draw. I will almost certainly eat the 2022 tag and mentor both the 2023 and 2024 tags, if I live that long.

I purchase the DH volunteer hours because it’s now too painful to do the volunteer work, so it’s $160 more per year. I gladly pay it. The really nice part that got upgraded to the program a few years ago is the fact that I can now mentor any child under 18, it no longer has to be just a direct family member. So, where as, I no longer have a grandchild that qualifies, I can mentor someone else’s child now.. That’s a great refinement.

I believe every State should adopt a workable version of a similar program. It gives children a perfect start into the lifestyle that may other wise miss the opportunity.

That’s one heck of a friend Zeke. Not only did he mentor your grandson this year. He mentored my son on his first cow elk hunt. I know he wouldn’t want me to out him so I won’t. But I know your son was on his mind when he drew that cow moose tag. He’s just that kind of dude. My boy had a blast. It’s hard to find friends like our buddy.

Amen to that Mr fstop.
I’m a little surprised our paths haven’t crossed.
We talk about you regularly. Some good, some bad. Hahaha JK man, it’s all good.
