I had a Toyota pickup with the gas cap on the right side and a Toyota 4runner with the cap on the left side. It was kind of a battle for me but at least when I had to move the vehicle I got it right the first time.

I used to do that all the time, then I found a left hand gas station, so I just go there all the time.
