Frustrated in Salt Lake

I live in the salt lake area and for years have wanted to start shed hunting. I have read all of your posts on shed hunting for years and get very excited to get into this sport.
My frustration comes from trying to patern the deer in their winter ranges. All of the deer I can find(and there are alot) are wintering on private property. Wether it be the ATK plant off of Backus Highway or the bucks that come down from the Oquirs down by camp william. I have even seen decent deer herds off of Bangerter Highway by 134,000 south.
So I know where the deer around my area are wintering, but all of the property is either private or military. So whats a guy to do. If I start trompsing around where I know its not private property I will be way higher than where the deer are wintering.
And I am not about to go walking onto government property or some farmers private land to get sheds. So where am I going wrong?
Are there deer still way up in the hills above the herds I am seeing down low that are shedding? Is that where everyone is getting their sheds from?
Any advise would be appreciated. I am still looking for my first shed. It will be a great day in my life, even if its only a forky. 1shot1kill.

WELL 1shotkill!!!

YOU'VE GOT TO GET AWAY FROM THE PRIVATE PROPERTY!!!

YOU CAN WISH ALL YOU WANT BUT YOU CAN'T HUNT IT & YOU CAN'T SHED HUNT IT EITHER!!!

SURE ITS NICE TO SEE THEM!!!

NOTHING WRONG WITH THAT!!!

YOU'RE GONNA HAVE TO FIND SOME PUBLIC GROUND & WAIT TILL SHED SEASON!!!

GOOD LUCK!!!

LAST EDITED ON Feb-19-07 AT 06:52PM (MST)[p]Dude, the only thing I can tell you is to try and find some other areas like down south and you might have to drive a couple hours to find some spots. If you have any friends in the BLM,DWR, or Forest Service see if they will give you some tips on some areas. They "should" know something. My sheddin partner did just that and now we have some new areas we hit that are producing some good sheds. I know its tuff especially this year for me the deer heards down here in southeast Utah are very scattered because of no snow. Or try to find out who owns the private propery and just ask them. Its not like your asking to go kill a big buck or elk, but I know it doesnt hurt to ask. You cant shed hunt up north right now anyways can you? Other than that just find good deer sign (fecal marbles ha, and tracks) and I gaurentee you'll start finding sheds. Keep your head up Bro!! Good luck. EBS PS I have asked private land owners before, some said no but others did'nt ever care as long as I was'nt tearin stuff up.
