Friday Night Drags

My ears are still ringing from an overdose of horsepower.
My eyes are raw from the sweet smell of nitromethane and the memories of gorgeous female race fans still etched in my brain.

A few sights from the 2011 Sonoma California NHRA Nationals Friday qualifying.

Way too much to see, but I got my fix.

Words cannot describe what a violent experience it is to see a combined 16,000 nitro belching horses unleashed in front of you.
You gotta see it to believe it.

Highlights were John Force qualifying #1 in Funny Car at 4.060 second run at 311.99 mph and Tony Schumacher in the Team Army Top Fuel Dragster running 321 MPH in the 1,000 foot course with six foot flames blazing out of the headers.

The blast force emitted by these monsters is simply indescribable.

Try to go next year Steve.
Today is race day in Sonoma.
I like qualifying on Friday night, far fewer people, and you get to see those huge header flames as they blast by you rattling every bone in your body.
TV is such a lame presentation of this spectacle.
I've said it so many times before, but it is beyond description.
It is like a 1,000 foot long explosion.
You watch the 1300 horsepower Pro Stockers run and they seem boring, even the Alcohol dragsters & funny cars that are cranking out about 3,00 horsepower seem very mild compared to the wicked 8,000 horsepower nitromethane burning monsters.
Each cylinder of the engine of a nitro car is producing about a thousand horsepower and with each exhaust stroke puts out an explosion from the header that sounds like no gasoline powered vehicle on earth.

No I asked him if he wanted to go to the drags with me & his uncle but he declined and instead went salmon fishing.

After seeing my pics, he was wishing he went for split tail instead.

Your photos are an accurate representation of the sights at an NHRA event. Even the funny car pictures. Like you say, there is no way to do it justice describing it to someone. Everyone should experience it once in their lifetime. Its way more than just drag racing.

No doubt top fuel and funny car racing is the BEST RACING IN THE WORLD!
I love the nitro fumes and noise, the best part for me is to go to the pits and watch the guys work on the cars, and stand as close as I can during the warmups, eyes burning and choking from the fumes! THESE GUYS HAVE GUTS to race these cars, crazy fast!
