FPS question

I was wondering about the whole IBO and AMO thing. I know that arrow speed has alot to do with arrow weight, draw length, poundage, etc. But when you see a bow advertised at 310 fps IBO and 240 AMO, then what can you expect that bow to actually shoot. And what does IBO and AMO stand for.

Thanks a bunch

As far a "advertised" speed goes, some bow companies tend to inflate the speeds a little. I absolutely love Mathew's bows, but have never got the speed out of them that they claim. On the other hand, Bowtech and Hoyt have both been pretty consistent with what they advertise. With Bowtech, they measure fps with the string loaded with a brass nock, and hush kit, the only thing missing is the peep. Every other company that I'm aware of measures speed without anything on the string so they can advertise faster speeds knowing darn well that the bow will slow down by about 10 fps once it's ready to shoot---kind of makes me mad.....

A 'bare' string is an IBO rating. A hunting set-up is represented by an AMO rating. The IBO speed is always advertised.
