FLYING FOR HORNS

I was just wondering if any of you know anything about guys using powered parachutes to find horns. I have a powered parachute and have been flying for years but have never used it for hunting or horn hunting. I have just recently, because of this site started to look for sheds. I know you can see them from the plane but is it ethical? I have done pretty good on the ground but the air would be so much easier. Any info or input would be nice.

You actually can spot sheds going a constant 28 mph??? Do you use binos or do you have a passenger that locates them for you? *LOOK OUT FOR THAT TREE"

Alot of people use them in the top trophy areas, they then use a GPS to make where they are at, and walk into them late. Some of the top sheds are found this way each year. If I had a PP plane I would be out looking. Good Luck and post what you find.

I would do it if i have a parachute plane too. I dont see how it is unethical and i dont see why it is bad for you to train your dogs to find antlers either. As long as you dont go out there and chase the deer with either of them i think it is perfectly fine.
Just my 2 cents.

Well, considering I had to really think ethically whether I should shoot one out of the sky a couple weekends ago when he was hovering over me and horn hunting the same ridge I was walking. I guess I really don't have a problem with it, but I was out for a nice day in the woods, not for a stroll at the "airport". What would have been more rude, him hovering over me, or me shooting him out of the sky so I could let him know how rude he was being.

Thanks for the replies. Just trying to get an idea of what the experts think of the whole deal. I do plan on hitting it as much as I can. And I will post the results.

Thanks again

Just a thought for you. In most states there are game harrassment laws in place. If the Conservation Officer deems that you are harrassing animals then you could get a ticket and your equipment confiscated. Bearing that in mind I wouldn't want to be out flying the current winter ranges when the animals are on them. Paraplanes bust out animals like nothing else, causing them to expend energy. Feb-midApril is the most critical time for the animals. They are just hanging on.

Go out in May, after the animals have moved off the winter ranges and fly if you want.

Would it be ethical for me to hire a guide to point out sheds for me? Maybe he has some on video that I could choose from, lol. fatrooster.

Your wife may not think your ethical when you come home looking beat up and a juniper branch up your ying yang.

BTW quads and bikes are dangerous too. And consider the animals. The elk you chase today will be somewhere else next time.

Go low impact.

There alot of area's to shed hunt, I'm sure the Parchute plane isn't going to move those elk or deer any farther then those Quads and pickups do already. But still places that don't have much snow and the herds are wintering in great fashion, other places the snow is up to your hip pockets on a tall man, DO WHAT YOU INNER FEELING TELL YOU IS RIGHT, because what is right for one isn't right for the rest. Southern and Southeast NV & Utah really don't have that much snow so those areas should be easier for the deer and elk to make it thru the winter in better health. A couple of weeks ago just outside Cedar City there was a bunch of bucks( no big ones) feeding out in the sagebrush along the hiway, they all looked in good shape. Some of the fields still had some green in them.

Ethical? Hell ya, that is how I find all my big sheds. I don't have a paraplane but my heli pilot sure knows how to drop down in some tight holes to get me close to the sheds. ;)

I always wondered how you get all those pig sheds BC. I guess we know how the master does it now. LOL.

JUST GET OUT AND ENJOY YOURSELF (WALK) DONT PUSH THE BRUSH OVER WITH YOUR QUAD OR PUSH THE ANIMALS AROUND WITH YOUR PLANE

I think that using a powered parachute to find horns is perfectly ethical as long as I am in the seat behind you helping spot sheds. So let me know when its time!!!

It's alot easier on the range\animals than a 4-wheeler, and nobody seems to mind shed hunting that way. What about a horse? is that ethical? come to think of it, expensive boots give rich guys an unfair advantage too, buch of a-holes.......

<< expensive boots give rich guys an unfair advantage too, buch of a-holes....... >>

Sounds like a personal problem...quit your whinnin and get a better job if ya can't afford a decent pair of boots...

Obviously Andymansavage was just being sarcastic man. Geez!

I agree with you Andy. I think flying and horse riding for sheds is a bunch of bull crap since I don't have a horse or a plane! A fairly decent pair of boots is ok and "ethical" for now though... ;-)

As far as flying for sheds being unethical goes I say sure it is as long as the animals aren't being harrassed in the process.

Good luck,

Not sure I want anyone by the name of "bigbone" sitting behind me in a parachute plane!

Non_Typ, nock that crap off. I 'bout tipped my chair over.

Hey Andy, good to meet. We'll see you at the Fest! AntlerFest that is...Not to be confused with October Fest.

Still laughing about the BigBoned para-plane. Maybe that's why Oneguy is so ornery...

nvrenuf and sneak, I gave out the flyers at the show and am excited for the "fest".

Yes I was being sarcastic about the boots, but I hate guys who use binos and spotting scopes to find sheds, lazy bastards.

LMAO! I think it's ok to use binos and spotters as long as they're not Swarovski, Leica or one of those other top end expensive brands! :)

just log on to one of those satelite websites, magnify the photo and you don't even have to leave home except to pick up the sheds!

I've seen that website... I think that it is just another dinky dog website that has no interest to the western hunter...:)

What happened to starting the shed season in May? That way us tennis shoe boys can pick em early and let you flyboys get some 'air'. LOL

What I want is one of them "jetpacks" for hornin...you know, those packs that slip on your back so you can fly.

Good idea oneguymontana, although some of the people I shed hunt with have so much "gas" that no jetpack is needed!

I just read post 19. Hillaaaaarious. At leat it wasn't somone with the screen name buttpirate or tirdburgler. Bigbone is pretty bad though...........
