Anyone out there spent much time fishing off the Beartooth Highway in Wyoming?
Do you mostly catch small trout?
I have planned on doing a little fishing this fall and would like to plan a future family trip one summer.
Would love to see some pictures.
Thanks for your time to give any word on the area.

Been many years ago, but yes I've fished up there, mainly there to hunt, so fishing was a second thought. Beartooth Lake holds fish the creek, and the other creek I fished was down from there, might have been Muddy creek. Mostly small fish, I did run into a guy one year that was looking for a Billy and he said that the lake had some bigger fish in it, how big not sure. I never caught a fish over 10", but you can't bet the views.

I have heard the fish are fairly small in most places.
Deep lake is the place I had hoped held some decent sized fish.
Guess I'll find out.

Thanks for your info.

There is some good fishing in the Beartooths. Pick up copies of 'Fishing in the Beartooths' by Pat Marcuson, and 'Hiking the Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness' by Bill Schneider.

Its better than good fishing in the Beartooths, I fish it all the time and mainly fish the lakes. If your taking your family, go towards the end of August after the mosquitos get killed off a little. They can be horrendous for awhile in July and early August. There is all kinds of trout up there, mainly Brookies, but some hold Grayling, Goldens, Lakers, Cutthroats etc. Deep Lake is supposed to hold the biggest Cutthroats and Brookies. Bearttoth Lake holds the biggest Lakers.

Like santana said, that Fishing The Beartooths book has everything you need to know about every lake that has fish in it up there.

Thanks so much for the information.
I have never caught a grayling.
That would be a great trip maker to catch a fish I haven't gotten before.
I will do some fishing there this October and hopefully bring up the family in the near future, one late summer.

Thanks again.

Fish Beartooth lake right after ice off. Talking the immediate days after ice off. Take smelt or sucker meat to the side of the lake farthest from the road and bottom fish it far out as you can throw. Caught lots of lakers that way

Don't forget if you decide to fish Montana to get a lic.

There are some lakes to access if your willing to walk a couple miles. some lakes behind Top of The World.

Thanks guys for all the information.
I did fish alot of the smaller creeks this past October and had a blast catching small brookies.
Seemed like the creeks I fished were full of them.
I'm going to have to try for some Lakers in the area on my next trip.
Maybe I'll bring a small boat.
Not likely I would fish Montana ,as there seems plenty of fishing spots in Wy along the highway and trails up there.
