We been saving our points for 5 years to hunt WY. Got a year we had some time and enough points for the unit we wanted. Had a awesome time!
Todd, Dad and I headed up to WY after I got off work Saturday. A 5 hour drive later we finally arrived to the first patch of BLM land in our unit. Lot of rain had fallen before we arrived so tenting was out of question due to the mud. I slept in box, Dad and Todd slept in cab of truck. Being it was nearly 1am, not a lot of time remained till sunrise.
With sunrise we were up and warming up our skillet breakfast. With food on our plates, I spotted three pronghorn, a buck to the east and a buck doe to the west. We got as close as we could to the bigger one, Dad was up first. He took two shots but missed. We headed back to the truck and stopped at second blm section. We immediately spotted a herd of pronghorn on the ridge near road. A close easy stalk got us with in range for the herd buck to immediately take off chasing a younger buck away. We set up and waited for him to come back to his does and sure enough, he headed back. Todd and I gave Dad another chance to redeem himself and he came through this time. First buck down Ensuring he was down, Todd and I took a look over the ridge to see if there was another buck. We spotted pronghorn all over, with a total number nearing 30 animals in multiple spots.
We put a stalk on a buck to have him give us the slip, when we immediately found a even bigger one we didn't see earlier. Dropping down into a hole we closed the ground to 350 yards in just a couple minutes. With a quick set up, we just waited till he gave Todd a broadside shot, 2nd buck down (Todd's biggest ever). We took a couple pics, got him near a 2 track road then went back to dad's. We found multiple animals again, on way back. Passed up a couple more bucks at a mere 40 yards twice.
After we got dad and todd's bucks deboned and in cooler on the ice, it was my turn. We headed farther back on the same area/piece of blm to glass up more bucks. Wasn't long and we were looking at a nice buck through spotting scope, only to have Dad say there was a herd behind us. After checking that buck out we made decision to head after him instead.
Ten minutes later I was lined up 266 yards away from a nice buck and his herd of does waiting for a good shot. First shot was through heart, just to make sure a second shot was let go too even though it wasn't needed
Was a great time, hope to make this a regular hunt in WY each year. Will need to find a different unit though so we can draw each year.
Dad's first ever Pronghorn buck
Todd and his biggest buck ever.
My buck, which is exactly 14"
We were all very happy to each get a good buck. We didn't realize how big the first buck dad missed was though till we seen his and Todd's on the ground. It was likely a 15 1/2" buck. Oh well, Dad will have something to have for a goal next time
Also, we got checked by the warden twice and seen him a third time. Great guy, was real nice and gave us some tips too! Was nice to see a warden out patrolling so much.
