First Bow Kill

Two Mondays ago I shot my first animal with my bow. Here in Cali the bow season opens in the middle of July. The second time out I was able to take a buck broadside. Im shooting a Muzzy 100 gr. and Ive heard that they will go through bone and mine did just the opposite. My arrow hit the shoulder blade and made a 90 degree turn and shot down the length of his body. He ran off with the arrow in him but I was able to see where he went to bed down to die. I found no blood what so ever. After the shot I let him lie for an hour or so. When I found him there wasnt even any blood where he was laying. It was all internal. Kinda scary! Luckily I hit something in him to put him down but I will make sure next time I stay away from that front shoulder! "Bad to the Bone"? - not in this case. Im hooked on hunting with a bow. Its been three years that Ive been doing it and it finally happened. Gun season opens here in a week but Ill keep hunting with my bow until the last week of the season. Ive fallen in love with it! Good luck to all of you and your bows. No one else knows how much of an achievement it really is to take an animal with a bow. Its unbelievable! Can I get an AMEN!!!

Congratulations Wiszard on your first bowkill. Broadheads can do funny things at times, especially when they are just a few inches off target and strike major bone. Bottom line is, you left him alone and recovered your buck.

Got any photos, we'd love to see them.

What a great story! I love to hear how people get hooked on bowhunting. There is nothing like having that buck walk up to you or put that endless stalk on and having everything turn out as planned. For me, there is no greater rush.

Show us some pictures.

Awesome! Did the arrow hit the on-side shoulder and stop or did it penetrate the animal and lodge in the off-side shoulder? How far was your shot? What poundage are you shooting? You did the right thing by waiting on him. Let see some pictures.

Congrats Wis, and kudos for keeping your wits about you and not push'in him!!
Try to keep your shots just behind the shoulder in the future.
Good luck the rest of the season!!!!

I have had that same problem with muzzys for the past couple of years. Granted I feel I could have hit the deer maybe a little further back, but I didn't and the muzzy did not perform the way that I would have hoped. I am stoked that you found your buck. I wish I would have found mine. I am almost ashamed to even say that I lost an animal, but that is part of the game I am afraid.
Anyways my two buddies shot deer last year and hit them both on the exact same angle and in the exact same place that I hit mine and both their deer were dead within maybe a minute at most. We were able to watch both of them go down. They were both shooting Rocket Steelheads!!!
Anyways congrats, that's awesome about your success.

1st congrats, on your entrance to a lifelong addiction.

The comment about the Muzzy's not living up to their reputation. Are we talking 4 blade or 3 blade. I have heard of failures on the 4 blades but never on the 3 blades. I have shot my fair share of critters with the Muzzy 100grn 3 blade with no problems. Last year I shot a 250+lb Muley, I dead centered a rib in and out, I heard my arrow clatter through the brush, I thought I had missed. This buck only went 30 yds. One tip is to take the trocar tips and touch them up on a stone right out of the box. The best of the $30.00 per six heads.

I'm with you Bro!
I took my first buck with a bow last week.
What a feeling of accomplishment!
Makes rifle hunting feel like cheating.
I'm hopelessly hooked like you!
Congrats.

Sorry- Ive been away from the site for a while! I dont have any photos developed yet. I had just started a new roll and I didnt bring my digital with me. Im too cheap to get the pics developed with out shooting the whole roll!! I know-- thats bad!Anyway- the shot was a 40yard shot and he was broadside. The arrow hit his shoulder and turned down his body towards his butt. There was a puncture wound on the back side of his ribcage. It was a very strange hit. Luckily it all worked out. I was shooting 3 blade Muzzy's. I havent shot any other broadheads and Im shooting Muzzy cuz I just figured they would penetrate anything. I was wrong. I just need a better shot placement next time. I appreciate all the Congrat's. It a great feeling. And congrats to you HunterHarry. Isnt it the best feeling to walk up on that deer and knowing you just took him with your bow that youve been working with for so long? Rifle season opens Saturday morning and you can bet Sat. evening Ill be sitting in my blind not with my rifle but my trusty PSE!!!
