First Bones of the Year...

Hey all, a friend of mine & I have been reading yer posts for quite awhile now and I thought I'd join the fun. Congratulations to those of you who are already having some success!

I hit the hills last weekend mainly to film bucks, but came across a hillside that was crawling with ravens, magpies & two golden eagles, so I decided to check it out...turns out it was a doe. So I was circling back to my truck to go to another area when I saw a shed-off buck working his way into the draw I was coming out of. I heeled my dog and tucked back behind a tree so he wouldn't see us. As soon as he disappeared into the draw I glassed the hill he just came off, and low and behold there was a big ol' 3lb. shed with fresh blood on the buckle! I signaled my dog back to "Huntemup!" and he retrieved it before I even got within' 50 yards of it (see pict.) So now we're in shed-huntin' mode for the other side and by the end of the day we found two more fresh singles and 10 hard-whites! My dog is responsible for finding about half of them, although he retreived all of them! We watched several other bucks that were still packing both sides, so we snuck around to make sure we didn't spook any of them. The big typical scores 88 points (27.5" main beam & 20" G2)...so we're lookin' hard for the other side (if it's the same, the buck should score a minimum of 198 B&C), but no luck yet. If we find the other side I'll post some picts. My dog matched up the smaller set the other day. Good luck out there guys!

That big typical is so big it doesn't even fit in the picture. Nice lookin' dog too.

Awesome Awesome sheds/
What part of the country does you and your dog find horns in? How old is your horn hunting buddy? How did you train him.
Are you going out this weekend?

Nice! Very nice! I'm guessing you're hooked now, right? :)

If you're married I sure hope you have an understanding wife!

We are in WY. Buck is 7 years old. He found his first shed (a great 7-point muley)on his own when he was a year old. If he had to choose between sheds & birds I think he'd pick sheds...he just hunts hard for 'em! He even brings back sheds while we're bird hunting! (However, I can brag that he is an awesome bird dog as well...especially with waterfowl) His father picked up sheds and brought them to us once he figured out what we were looking for. And Buck's mother will pick up sheds too if she comes across one, but she won't hunt as hard for them as Buck does.

As far as training...part of it is his desire to please and the other part I just played various games with him. One game we'd play is I'd hide antlers around the house/yard and have him "huntemup". The important thing (I believe) is that I let him play with them, then put them away. That way he still wanted something that he couldn't have all the time...feeds the "drive"!

Am I going out this weekend? Hmmmm...let's see...yep!

NvrEnuf,

I am hooked for another year! I didn't even expect to start finding anything for a couple weeks yet, so this could be bad!

My wife has been awesome...but I do tend to push my luck by the time May rolls around!

Hey NFH!

Glad to hear you're still out there and getting after it! Good luck with finding your WT sheds...I'll look forward to seeing your picts!

Happy Antler "Finding"!

Huntemup

Greg, I don't know what you are talking about. I've never found any sheds before. Actually, I've never even looked for them before.

Why is everybody calling me "Greg"?...my Online name is "Huntemup"!

As for Elklover1 not looking for, or finding antlers...it's a myth! He's my antler finding hero!

Huntemup, sorry, we won't call you dirty names anymore..... Huntemup forever and from now on.

Great finds and great pics! Hope you and Buck find the other side of that big typical. I actually have a new shed hunting partner this year. She is a 10 month old chocolate lab. I've been trying to teach her to pick up sheds but she hasn't got the idea yet. She is more interested in hunting up chukar and quail since that's what we did a lot this winter. She can't figure out why I'm not shooting now when she flushes them out for me. :)

Hopefully she starts getting the hang of it soon. I'll give it a try with hiding some around the house.

Lowedog,

Sounds like you have one heckuva bird dog though. 10 months and honed in on birds is definitely a great sign! Those labs can sure cast a dirty look when you don't shoot at birds that they flush!

I'll bet that once you start picking up a bunch of sheds this year, and letting her fetch a few back for you, she might come around on sheds too. Best of luck to you!

I'll accept your apology IF you post a picture of at least one of your big finds for us to see!

Thanks for the pics,... Great finds too... Mind telling us what the BIG brown 4pt shed on the tailgate scores? Im guessing an 85 incher?!?!

Browtine,

Thanks...wish I could match those two bigger ones up though! The country is huge and the grass & brush are deep...but I plan to stay after it. Buck found the other side to the smaller one the other night.

The big one goes 88"...good guess! The big 3pt that Buck is carrying is a chunk at 3 pounds! I think it's off an older buck going downhill. Anyway, I'll let y'all know if I have any luck pairing them up this weekend.

Good luck to you!

Thanks BuckSnort! He'll only find bones for me! Really...my brothers have tried!

Take care!
