First archery deer- help with scoring?

hello all. This is my first NV archery buck, and boy am I happy with him! I would like to ask help with the scoring; I haven't measured him yet, but am hoping he may go into Pope & Young. My first rifle deer is smaller than him, and scores a 144 but he has eyeguards unlike this guy. Any thoughts? Even if he doesn't make it, I couldn't be happier with him! Thanks for looking!

p.s. If anyone can show me how to post the picture to the message (instead of a link), it would be appreciated. Thank you.

Looks like you got the picture figured out. That is a book buck if I have ever seen one. Go to the P&Y website and you can print out a score sheet with directions on how to measure him. If you want an official score you need to contact P&Y and get in touch with one of their measurers. Congrats to you on a great buck! Especially for your 1st!

NVpackrat:

First off, very nice buck, congratulations! Photos are very hard to judge, at times, and without a side view it's even harder. As an official P&Y measurer, I'd defintely say he's close enough to get a tape ran on him. Can you give us some measurements to help us out?

Here's my "guess" as to some of them. Again, juding from photos is tough, and I've been wrong before.

Smallest measurements for official NET score:

MB-21"
G1-0
G2-12" (left side)
G3-7.5" (right side)
G4-8.5" (right side)
H1-4 - 14"

One side-63"
X2=126"
Inside spread 19/20"

Total net- 145/146"???

Of course all this can change depending on the main beam length. Let us know how it comes out.

Sure looks P and Y to me! Congrats on a beautiful buck! That's a good one for a first, a last or anytime.

BOHNTR,
I downloaded the B & C and P &Y forms, and they look like the same system so I followed B&C.
MB-22 3/8"(rt) 20 (lft)
G1-0
G2-13 3/8" (left side) 14 5/8"(rt)
G3-7 7/8" (right side)10"(lft)
G4-9 5/8" (right side)9 3/4"(lft)
h1 4 1/4" (rt) 4 1/4 (lft)
h2 3 7/8" (rt) 4" (lft)
h3 3 1/8(rt) 3 1/4(lft)
h4 4" (rt) 3 5/8 (lft)
I don't know about circumference total you have; unless added up, I don't know how to even get close to 14"? (H1-4 - 14")

I came up w/ 153 and change after deductions. I am using as flexible a tape measure as possible, but I'm not sure if it is accurate enough. How much shrinkage can I expect? I know the minimum is 145 for books; if he is this close, I'd hate to shrink down that much.
All in all, like I said whether he makes it or not, he is freakin' awesome to me. I was even at the point of trying for spikes & forkies (meat bucks) when he came along. Problem is- now I have to try and top him! Oh, and my husband thinks now he has to get a 30" next year to beat me.....
Thanks again, guys.

I simply added all four circumference measurements per side. With the measurements you posted, I was fairly close, with your total NET being 14 7/8" per side.

Your actual tine lengths (G2-4) are a bit better than what I estimated based soley on a photo, which is VERY common. If the inside spread is around 20", you're computed score should be pretty close to 152". Based on your numbers, it should have NO problem making the minimum score for P&Y.

As far as shrinkage, you will see a minimal amount (no more than 4/8"), with the most common occurring with the inside spread. Make sure you don't cut the skull cap too short. Keeping it whole, (European style) will reduce inside spread shrinking greatly, IMO.

Congratulations on a fine mule deer. If you need help finding a measurer near you, PM me and I'll locate one for you.
