After a couple of very frustrating and educational archery antelope hunts in Wyoming the last 2 years, I finally pulled it off and put the sneak on a Utah pronghorn this past weekend.
We were putting the sneak on one buck with a group of does and got busted at around 60 yards. The herd of horses following us didn't help much, but made for some interesting moments. After that group blew out of there we noticed a lone buck feeding about 300 yards out.
We basically walked straight at the buck (in the wide open), the two of us crouched behind a very small decoy. Hard to believe it worked, but when we got to 50 yards and I decided I felt comfortable with the shot and I sent the Gold Tip on its mission. The shot was good, the buck ran out to about a hundred yards and offered another shot so I took it. This shot hit the 10R after a bounce off of an anthill-you'll have to see it to believe it.
The buck went another 10 yards and did the antelope back flip.
We caught it all on film! But, here's the kicker. As of now the tape may be out of commission as somehow the tape flipped over on itself. We're not sure if we're going to be able to salvage the footage or not. To say that I'm sick about it would be an understatement! Perhaps the curse of the antelope isn't over for me after all!
Pics to come soon.
