Finally finished my rifle. Got scope for Xmas & birthday for next 5 years. LOL. Savage action, Brux #5 contour stainless barrel 1-8.5 twist, Stockage thumbhole stock. Sharpshooter trigger, recoil lug, Barrel installed and action trued by Centershot Rifles. Stock, trigger, and paint work done by me. Still working up loads to determine load data, etc. Been too cold and windy to get to the range much. Thanks for your suggestions about a year ago when I started this project. MITROLL

MITROLL, VERY Sharp looking outfit!!!

What's the total weight?

Hope you get out of it what you're looking for. Sweet!!

Joey

It weighs 1 lb more than my 300 win mag. 10 lbs with the scope. It doesn't feel like 10 lbs though. I quess I will have to lose a few more lbs before I go hunting.

Nice looking rifle Mitroll! my 6.5x284 likes h4350, that and h4831 seem to be the go to powders. ce61

LAST EDITED ON Jan-11-10 AT 06:15PM (MST)[p]I have those powders on my shelf. I am starting with Reloader 17 first though . Ive only shot it 20 times just to determine min and max loads. I went up to 53.1g before I had an extractor mark on the shell face. That was at 3055 fps. Outside temp was about 30 deg. The bolt was not sticky. I think I am about max though. I'll start loading some up for accuracy and the OCW or Ladder type method to see where my accuracy nodes are. I'm trying the 140 Bergers Vld hunting bullets 1st. If that doesn't work I'm going to try those other powders. Like you said and on that 6MMBr page it seems to prefer those powders. Thanks again for your suggestions when I was trying to decide on a caliber for this build. Thanks Brian

Very nice! Good looking stick. I've always thought that'd be a great caliber, and is on my list. How does she shoot?

Savage just came out with a new gun in 6.5x284 that sure looks good for a factory, but nothing like that.

Thanks. Still working up load data. Seems to shoot nice. Low recoil. I seen the Savage magazine article right about the time I got mine finished. Sure would have been nice to try the Savage factory one as well and would have saved me half the cost. Oh well it was fun building it.

Thanks, Im still working on load data at 100yds. It is shooting .4-.9 inch groups which may not say much at 100 yds. Can't wait till it warms up so I can do some shooting at longer ranges.

That thing is awesome! How do you like that stock? I am probably going to buy a Stockade for my Savage as soon as I get it rebarreled.

Thanks.

I really like the thumbhole stock. I just wish it was a tad bit higher where I rest my cheek. So far I am shooting half to 3/4 in grps at 100 yds just working up load data. Thanks Brian

Did you have to send it to Stockade, to match the inletting? I am having my smith rebarrel mine without the nut, and the guy at Stockade got pissy about it. He is a big fan of the nut system, but I do not plan on changing out barrels.

It looks like if you scraped the rail you could mount that scope a little lower. But I guess if your gonna shoot long range you may need a rail with an offset????

No I done it myself. He told me the same thing about the nut but I had already ordered it from the smith without a nut. It took me about 4 months to get that stock from Stockade. I ordered the unfinished stock. I had to do some filling in around the tang area. It was kind of generic when I got it. Brian

I have the Burris offset inserts in the rings. I needed the height to clear the bell of the scope and also for the proper eye relief. The base has no taper. Brian

Thanks, I have Talleys on mine now, but those Savage long actions are really loooong, so a one piece would be better.
