Well I was wondering if any could help with some tips on field scoring elk? What to look for? How to rough score from a distance? And what class size i may be looking at? I was lucky enough to draw a limted entry elk tag this year after waiting 5 years for it and im not sure how to field socre these animals..So anyone that could relay some well valued info. on this matter it would greatly apperciated...thanks

First look at the sword point and count back 4, 5, 6, etc. Then look at tine length and condition, broken, missing, etc.

I had to go through the same thing last summer, I spent countless hours wandering around hunting stores and practiced scoring them especially from far away. Also another good way is to check every single website out and prior to looking at the "score" try and guess. Just remember that some people like to "stretch" the numbers. Then last but not least is to SCOUT, not only for areas to find them but to see some Big bulls on the HOOF. Even if you aren't good at scoring on the hoof at all, everyone can tell if a paticular bull is bigger than another so if you spend a lot of time out there scouting and can find a couple of specific bulls that are bigger than the others you are seeing, you will do good if you shoot one of the biggest bulls in the area no matter the score.

congrats and best of luck
