fence lines

Personally Never found an antler on a fence line... anyone have a different opinion on this matter?

Last year I found a matching moose set right by a fence. I had pretty much given up on the whole concept until finally it paid off.

ive walked many miles of fencelines and only picked up a few sheds by them. they are not very productive but i still find my self walking them.

And another thing is that I like to see some nice country when I go out. The ole barbed wire fence doesn't do it for me. I think it can work but, give me the sights over the success.

I have picked up dozzens of deer and several elk sheds along fences

Time in the hills is always worth more than money

I've never found anything along fence lines until this year. I found 5 in one day along fence lines. This fence also had a dirt road running beside it that was partially covered with snow. The deer were using the road as a travel corridor even during winter when it was completely covered with snow and the fence kinda kept them on the road even though they could easily jump it. But since that day I haven't found any antlers on the fence. fatrooster.

I was feeling just like you up until a month ago. I read that fence lines were a good place to look, but I had never found anything there. Then we spotted this nice pair (about 75 inches each) five feet apart next to a fence!

Now, to put it in context, I have found 26 antlers in my entire life, so two out of 26 is about 8%. So, I'm pretty sure that fence lines are not the best place to look, but you never know! : )

I have never had much luck on fence lines but I know of a few people that have and sometimes it pays off.

I got hooked on hiking the hills looking for sheds in 2005. In February of that year, I was stalking 3 cow elk just to get their picture. I returned to my vehicle, following a drift fence through an old pinon-juniper burn. I almost missed a set where a big old 5 x 6 bull had leaped the fence and lost both on impact- it was really neat to see! Since then I have found about three other elk antlers and one deer antler along fencelines. I have also found one elk antler and 3 deer antlers just lying in the middle of a two-track. Other good places to check are in thickets where the animal may have bedded down, or jarred the antler loose rubbing against branches, or the bottom of washes or draws where the animal had to jump across.

i have found both a 7 point and a huge 5 point elk on fence lines. and have one place i hunt deer antlers where they cross the fence going to water. i have found 50+ sheds on that fence threw the years.
i hunt trails going to water, bowls and draws, ridgelines and sand dunes.

LAST EDITED ON Mar-21-09 AT 08:52AM (MST)[p]Check the washes and draws thats where I do pretty good. Fencelines are ok but alot of people think they are good place to look so might have been walked are glassed before. "26 in your life that's a decent day for me"

Ya the most antlers i have found in a day is 3... and they were moose palms! where is my luck?!? someday... someday...

You hit the nail on the head, UteHunter. It seems this forum has two kinds of people... Those that go out and find 20 sheds in a day and those that find two sheds every two days. I'm in the latter category wondering what the heck the guys in the former category are doing differently. I have to say though, it is very entertaining to see the fruits of your labors... keep the pics coming! : )

On your way up the mountain, don't forget to look back and enjoy the view.

I have actually found quite a few along fencelines...but I do alot of riding fence for ranchers too...

So whats up with utehunter, just likes to be a prick and call people liars. Some people can only find a shed or two thats all the time they have( work school, family?). Who cares if you find that in a day. Enjoy it, don't rub your sucess in others faces.
I think fence lines are a good place to look in the right places. Depends where the fence is located according to where the animals winter. You cant just aways follow a fence line. My dad an I found the biggest shed I have ever found or anyone else I know riding a fence line. I think if the other side matched the deer would have scored in the 220-230 range maybe more.

Personally it has never paid off for me... I have picked up one small old 2 point. I prefer to stick to the high mountain ridges and tree lines.

PERSONNALLY I CANT FIND ANYTHING BY TREELINES OR WHERE THEY BED BUT DO GOOD ONOPEN SIDEHILLS AND SAGEBRUSH FLATS
