Elk unit 108

All but the southeast part that is pretty solid public land is checkerboard land, so it would depend on who owns the private land sections as to whether there would be much land up there that's legal to hunt. Maybe someone who lives out there will be able to tell you what you want to know since I'm not up on that unit.

do a search. I wrote up a report when I had the tag. Fun bow hunt as not much pressure so elk stay on public. Really crowded rifle hunt and elk flock to the private due to pressure and limited public access.
Glad I drew it back when it only took 5 points.

I hunted it a few years back with Rifle. As has been mentioned there is a small area of public that consistently holds Elk and they are off the public by noon on opening day. A friend of mine from Rawlins that has hunted there several times says that the bow hunt is better (as has been noted here ) but the "Elk area" is small (about 4 - 5 sections) so it doesn't take many bow hunters to
booger that up. Remember that there are a couple hundred guys with cow tags in that unit too. Honestly, unless you can get on private I think there areas where you can have a higher quality hunt with your points.

As a nonresident I'm really just looking for a good area where I can stay out of the wilderness areas so I don't have to hire a guide, would you recommend something?

I certainly understand where you're coming from and I'm not trying to discourage you. It really depends upon your style. If you like to roam and cover ground and not be confined to a fairly small area and worry about private land issues there are several units in the Bighorns that would likely meet your needs - especially if you're willing to spring for the special tag.

Mike will give you good advice on the Bighorns. Don't discount the units with a bit of wilderness though. They all have good hunting out of the wilderness too - especially in the archery season. Do a search on here for several of those units and kind of get a feel for them. They're all a bit different but all good if you do your homework and burn a little boot leather. Good Luck

Another consideration is deer hunters. There is an incredible number of deer hunters (especially during rifle season in the southern part of the unit (unit 82 deer). Rifle deer starts prior to rifle elk so you can guess where the elk go! Add onto that cow elk hunters and it gives you a feel for the hunting pressure on public land.

Never hunted it but have friends that have, as mentioned access is not great and they also say a big wind farm is being constructed ot is in the works

I actually misspoke and one of the two units I recommended to him does have minimal wilderness area in it, but there are plenty of elk in the NF and on the BLM in it.

82 for deer is not even in 108... it's unit 84 and it's all limited as well..

82 for deer is not even in 108... it's unit 84 and it's all limited as well..
