Elk Student Carving Update

Awhile ago, I mentioned that a couple of my students were carving/drilling antlers for our Elk Students of the Month. We are trying to decide whether to stain around the names for a more finished effect. Here are a couple of pictures of our progress so far. Yes, the students will get the antlers to keep as soon as we're done. (Berto, thanks we did get some real respirators for our dremel operators.)

I think stain could be a good idea if the antlers aren't too chalky and porous (like a couple look in the picture). If they are too chalky, what about burning their names into 'em?

Thanks. Yeah, the kids aren't getting the set on the shelves. I teach at the middle school in Ely. We're up for suggestions and will try burning names tomorrow (if we can find a very well ventilated area-that's going to smell something awful).
