elk skull

Was scouting in my elk unit yesterday when I came across this smallish 6X6 skull about six miles from the road. The left main beam is nearly chewed through by rodents above the four. I'd like to pack it out but this is New Mexico. Anyone here dealt with G&F about packing one of these bad boys out? If so, how long before you received permission and how much did it cost ya?

Forget it. Ain't gonna happen unless you happen to have an unused elk tag from previous years.

It shouldn't cost you too much, it depends on who you deal with. I found a deer rack once, and was charged by the weight and the going rate for antler at the time. If it is chalky, you may get it for $5-$10 bucks...who knows. Do not put an old unused tag on the rack, it is illegal in NM to do so.

Why in God's name would you want to pack that out? It's not worth anything and certainly not a trophy. If the critters already found it, leave it...maybe it will save a future shed from their rath...

heheh, I don't know why I feel like I have to bring that thing out. It's a genetic thing...

Besides, if nothing else I can cut the antlers off to use as building blocks to continue the arch (ala Jackson Hole) that I'm building over the koi pond in my back yard. This was a lean year for shed hunting as I only found about 15. I'll take what I can get...
