elk sheds

I know this subject has been touched on more than we probably all can hardly stand but here in Northern Utah I really get the itch to get out and find some sheds especially now that there is a season to find them. However, my buddy just called me and informed me of some activity in an area that we had planned on shed hunting. This winter an area we had watched had about 50 bulls or more located there. We've patiently waited for the season to start in a couple weeks but have recently been told there have been guys up there posting stakes and flags next to all the sheds and putting them on their GPS's so they can go right to them on the opening day of the season. But COME ON!!! What is the difference between hiking right up next to a shed and jamming a stake with a flag on it right next to it or punching in the sheds cordinates on your GPS??? To me that's shed hunting. The only difference is your don't pick it up. Can anything be done??? I mean if the DWR catch people doing this are they going to be in trouble or will they let it slide??? Just some feelings of mine. I've been a little dissapointed with hearing this news and wanted to know how all of you felt about it. It just doesn't seem right, as a matter of fact, it's not right. This shed season is not working here in Northen Utah and I don't think ever will because all the people that have harrassed wildlife in the past for their sheds will still be doing the same thing now. Just cuz there is an existing shed season doesn't mean that they'll stop their ways. Harrassing wildlife was unlawful to begin with. I mean, call me crazy but I"m not seeing any use to this shed season here in Northern Utah.

SHOOT ME A PM OF WHERE THIS IS!!!

AND I'LL RE-TUNE THE GPS COORDINATES JUST A LITTLE!!!

I'LL EVEN TAKE CARE OF THE STAKES!!!

IS THIS WHAT ITS COMMING TO???

WAFJ!!!

THIS IS MY NEW GUN,YOU MAY NOT LIKE IT,YOU'LL LIKE IT A HELL OF A LOT LESS WHEN IT HITS ITS DESTINATION!!!

It is sad. People can't be patient for a few weeks. They've gotta beat everyone to them. What ever happened to fair chase??? I mean, I know it's different with sheds, but it's like someone's gotta be a step ahead of another to find em. It's ridiculous. I remember the days when I went up any time I wanted, stayed away from the deer til they were out of the area and found numbers of sheds without a soul in sight. It's a HUGE change now.

Shed hunting has become a circus at best. Here in Utah, there are more people in the mountains hunting sheds then hunting deer in october. I have a friend with the DWR who has stated that the antler season will be state wide soon and that they are strongly considering imposing a fee to pick them up. As sportsman we have failed to police ourselves and are now facing more regulations and laws.

The more we "shed hunters" whine and complain about our fellow competitors the sooner it will just be totally illegal to pick up or possess sheds altogether. Keep that in mind when you post for all to read...

As this sport is cast in the "circus like" atmosphere that I mostly see on this forum, those who really don't know what it's about but have the powers, will soon pass laws to fix it totally.

^BIGBONE^

They can't charge a fee for sheds in Wyoming because the ledgislature had said that once an animal has shed his antlers they are no longer considered wildlife and therefor no longer part of their jurisdiction. I'm not sure about Utah but the BLM and Forest Service can and will continue to close wintering areas until later in the year.

i have talked to a couple of dwr guys in utah concerning fishing and hunting violations that i have witnessed and from what i understand there just aren't enough of them to go around. there is too much ground to cover with not enough man power. i don't want to be a nark or anything but if people are breaking the law and its going to screw up the things i enjoy about the outdoors then i don't feel too bad about pointing the law in the right direction. to me there is no point in passing a law if you can't enforce it. it kinda makes law enforcement look like a joke and no one takes them seriously. i don't know how everyone else feels, but it sounds like we are all out in the hills more than they are and they could use some help.
