Elk Hunt-looking for someone to pack out meat

Good luck on that. I don’t kill anything that I can’t pack out in a timely fashion, especially when it is hot like this.

Hopefully you have the elk quartered out and have the meat off the ground and in the shade. Try going to the surrounding ranches asking for a cowboy for help. You’ll need to offer $$$. Or go onto Walden and see what you can dig up. Hope that bears, coyotes, or wolves haven’t found it yet. I have a buddy that killed a bull a mile from camp late one evening, and group of us went early the next morning to pack it out. The entire elk had been eaten, not 10 pounds left.

Oh boy get the popcorn out… this is gonna be good. So many initial questions, but I’d be willing to be bet that meat is spoiled by the time you get a packer back there…. Temps in the mid 70’s geesh! Pro tip. Never ever ever shoot anything that you don’t have a personal plan to get out. The time is to coordinate a packer is about 6 months prior to your hunt! Hopefully for your sake there aren’t any wardens trolling the site… a pretty easy wanton waste ticket for them

If this post is serious, hopefully a warden catches wind of it and can accompany you back to your elk to assess what fines/penalties you'll have in store for wasting a game animal.

To hop on the internet to start making plans for what to do with meat AFTER it's on the ground 5 miles from your camp in 70+ degree weather.... you have no business hunting. If it's still on the carcass or laying in the sun, that meat will be starting to spoil by the time packers even get to it.

If you don't already have a plan in place before pulling the trigger, carry it out on your back or don't pull the trigger. Pretty simple.

Do better or stay home.

Always used to get a kick out of dudes at the gas station looking for someone to pack out an elk they have already killed. Doesnt get more irresponsible than that. If you aren't prepared to pack it out on your back don't shoot it, that simple.

Even if you have talked to a permitted outfitter or packer ahead of your hunt, no guarantee they will have time for you when you call. Its busy season and outfitters are under no obligation to pack for anyone who kills something in their permitted area. Not to mention this type of adventure usually turns into a sh!t show for the packer. There is never an easy where there.
