I can't believe what is going on already! My son came home from hunting deer bones on Saturday with a nice set and a single elk antler. He had a herd of 12 bulls come by him and one was not packing any headgear, so he got on their trail and backtracked for over two miles, and found both sides of that elk's sheds. On his way back to the truck, he stumbled across antoher fresh shed. On Monday evening I was up scoping some bulls, and as I was scanning them, suddenly one of the bulls only had one antler! I videoed that bull for 30 minutes hoping to catch the other side falling off. It was great watching him try and knock the other side off. Finally he went over a ridge and into a canyon. I drove down the road and ran into another guy watching them and he said that the other side had fell off in the canyon. I decided to head home and as I got down the road about 1/2 mile, there is my son's pickup parked along the road. I turned around and drove back and threw my scope up just in time to see him come across the sidehill and pick up both bones!!! 5 fresh bones in 3 days, and still if February!!
Cool, huh???

I do this every year. (ants in my pants, or antlers) Your killin me. Great finds. Can I ask what state? Mabey I will take off work tomarow. Good job!!

Nice job Rick!! I heard ther was some good bulls up there, we,ll have to get busy looking. Tell J.F. I said congrats.

Antlerrick, i need some clarification. you pretty much seen the elk drop the antler in front of you. then the elk heads over the hill and out of sight. then you leave without going over and snagging the antler. what is wrong with this picture. then you talk to a guy that sees the other antler drop and neither of you go pick it up. and then by coincidence, your son happens to come over the hill and finds them right then with you watching through your spotting scope.

let me in on what i am missing here.

That's great to hear. We've got over 50 bulls located that we're just waiting on and know it won't be long. Thanks for the "pump-you-up!"

Elkantlers,
First of all, I just had surgery and was in no condition to go and hike up the hill, Second, there is no reason to jump the bull still packing and have him run off with the other antler still attached. Third, there is no reason to push the bulls clear out of the country by a couple of guys racing up toward them, and finally, it was almost dark and it was quite a ways up the side of the mountain.....
And my son had seen the bulls the evening before, and had scoped them earlier and had seen the one side was gone and so he had hiked up there and was sitting there watching them when the 2nd side fell off and the elk moved up the hill...He was in his own outfit, and I didn't know he was there until I was leaving and found his truck parked down the road a ways.. After I seen his pickup, I went back to where the elk had been and that is when I spotted him hiking up to where the sheds were..

There is nothing wrong with that picture as far as I can see..
Guess we could have both went running up the hill fighting over the one side that was there and pushed the elk miles away and then fought over the one side .. I was just sharing some photos and some news over the elk starting to drop here...Guess if you don't believe it, you don't believe it... OK by me...
Hope that clears up your "what's wrong with this picture".

antlerrick, i guess you are right. you don't need to run up there and scare the elk away, because your son was already up there doing that

hey guys...i don't want to get in the 'middle of this', but 'elkantlers'....that last comment was un-called for..let it go...

Hey guys, Sorry I shared the picture and the story.
I'll steer clear from now on....
Have a great shed hunting season!!

Antlerrick,

Thanks for sharing the story and the pics. Hopefully you wont be deterred by the jealous wanker, and will continue to share more success stories with us!! Tell your son congrats as well.

Scott

PS:ELKANTLER-----YOURE A WANKER!!!

Sounds like elkantler has a personal problem. good find cant wait till the local herd starts droping. then slap leather.

elkantlers,
If you dont understand what someone means dont accuse them of lieing just ask them to explain it for you. And there is no need for you to try to throw little comments in like that. Just go find your own if you cant handle someone else find them.

A*R, great story and finds. thanks for the pics. Dont let one person ruin the rest of your posting pics and stories. I'm with everyone else in this post.. Thanks for sharing.

Elkantlers, I also agree that was uncalled for..Have a good one

first of all, i did not accuse anyone of lying! my exact comment was "let me in on what i am missing here".

i just didn't understand it when AR said that he had saw the elk drop one antler and then it went over the ridge and out of sight, and he didn't go pick the shed up.
i didn't imply that AR should have run up there and scared the elk out of the country to get the antler. however, he said "the elk went over a ridge and into a canyon", so that means that he could have went up after the antler without the elk being spooked.

all he would have had to say is that he was recuperating from a surgery and then his post would have made sense.

second, he was the one that said going up on that hill would have pushed those elk out of the country, yet he has no problem with his kid up there.

finally, thats real mature tuffbucker. name calling is for elementary school.

Hey elkantlers any fresh elk bone this year ???????? Let us know

Cameron

Negative huntercameron, the elk around here are all still packing. i would imagine that in another week to ten days they will start hitting the ground.

how about you?

Elkantlers,
All is cool... I just didn't realize I needed to give my life story to post. I should have made it more clear. I did say I didn't want to scare the bulls, and even though my son, who is old enough (24) that he doesn't need daddy telling him what to do, was up on the hill, he sat and watched them until the other antler dropped and the elk moved up the hill. He didn't boo them at all, and was very patient in waiting for the elk to move away. The bulls were there again the next evening, so I know he didn't spook them any. Hope everything is cleared up. I don't claim to be perfect, and hope I don't ever meet anyone who claims they are!!! Just wanted to share some excitement with everyone. Hope you all can find some elk bones this year!!
I appreciate everyones comments!!
Rick

evreything is cool!

your son ought to feel lucky, i don't know many people that have actually watched a shed hit the dirt.

i came close one time. a bull i was watching walked behind some cedar trees while feeding, all of a sudden that same bull (minus some head gear) comes busting out from behind the trees at a dead run. i think when his antlers fell off that it scared him.

later.

My son has seen them drop 5 or 6 times, but then he basically lives up in the mountains most of the year, and spends hours upon hours glassing....
I also think that when an antler hits the ground, it scares all the elk momentarily.
Take Care!

hey....this is good....i like it when everyone explains their side, and all 'works out'....no one is bitter, and we're all friends here, right?.. now, everyone get out there and find some 'bone', and let's share....

You got that right, littlefoot...
And I can't believe you're not out pickin up bone this time of day..With all those bulls you been photographing, you will need lots of time to pack all that bone off the hill!!!!!
Can't wait to see a couple of those big boys!!

A bad day hunting is better than a Good Day at Work!!

hey rick nice bones. The one night I don't make it up there he drops. damn the luck.

Yeah, I hear ya...the only time I know where a bone is laying and I'm to butchered up to hike up there!!!
It was fun trying to video him dropping the other side, though. That would have been pretty neat to catch on film....
You better get up there...it is getting more crowded every night. There were probably 15 outfits pass by me when I stopped and scoped the other night, and I was only there for about 20 minutes....

I picked up a single on wednesday, about a 320 6 point, a couple ridges to the west.

Glad to see everybody kissed and made up!!
Rick I hope you get better so you can be on the mountain with your son.

Good story... Thanks for sharing. Recover soon... Only 5-7 more months to go and bowhunting or rifle is underway.

I aggree with others... don't stop posting due to one or two comments that screw it up for the rest of us that read. There are many like me that read or check site frequently and never post. I enjoy the comments and posting that seem to flow in for all those other hunting/shed hunting nuts out there.

Get well soon.
