even with the cotrolled number of elk tags, do the elk hunters seem to favor a particular unit or do you find that everybody is rather dispersed? hows the mix of whitetail and mulies, 50/50? more mulies? i hunt everywhere in the panhandle, just thinking about a change in scenery, and a good challenge. thanks for any input.

As far as the ratio of Muley/Whitie there are WAY more whitetails. Probably not far off from the ratio in the panhandle. Maybe a little better but not much. Muleys are there but few and far between compared to the whities.

Mule Deer are also a controlled hunt in Unit 14 of that zone. As far as hunter dispersal, they are pretty widely dispersed across the whole zone. You'll definitely run into more hunters the closer you are to pavement, major forest road, or town. I had two friends that bowhunted it for a while and did pretty well backpacking into roadless areas away from the crowds. Personally I wouldn't trade a panhandle tag for it though.

I would have to agree with IDkTm as well on hunter dispersement. I am not an expert on the area and no, I am not from the area. I have hunted up there a few times and look forward to any trip I get to take up there. Great country and a lot of game; just not an overabundance of muleys. I think you could get into some good elk hunting though.

I just moved to the panhandle (Kellogg) from Boise last month. What area are you from up here?

Also, you might try and get in touch with springbear here on MM.com. He is from that area I believe and seems to help out quite a bit with information. He would probably be a good source of information if you are serious about hunting down there and be able to get you more detailed info.

thanks for the info jax, i'll try to get ahold of springbear. i've read his past replies to others. sounds like he runs those hills quite a bit..

I hunted the zone a lot. I used to own the country corner store and laundry in Elk City. there was never too many mulies and the whitetails hung out within a couple of mile of Elk City. It used to be good elk hunting before they changed the season to have hunters in the brush all the time. I hunted horse creek over by selway falls.I always waited until after the first week. Everyone hunted the first week then went home. After that I had it all to myself. I alway scouted and patterned the elk starting in early august. I counted all the bulls then when hunters came to shower at the store I asked if they killed anything. When they all left I knew how many elk were killed and how many were left. Killed one every year.
