Eastmans vs. Hunting fool battle

After receiving the current copy of the Hunting Fool and the new MRS version of Eastmans, which is better? Eastman's added a lot more into the MRS than past years. Is this going to be a battle between the two companies during the oncoming months? Is Eastman's just trying to regain some of their past customers? I liked information in both and they have different styles. I thought the Hunting fool was easier to find stats, although I do not always agree with their conclusions on the quality of a unit. Eastman makes somewhat of a try to rate a hunting area, but do not put much comment into it. How far will these publishings take us in the future. GPS coord.'S ?
 
I enjoy the content in Eastmans alot more. Ya hunting fool says exactly where to apply, but don't most of us know after surfing on here that the Henry mountains are awesome etc. I would just assume that $100 on a chance on a hunt than to listen to Garth sell out the neighborhood, and hear how good all of his hunts were this year.
 
Concidering you have to pay how much for a subscription to Huntin' Fool?

I love the new info in the last coupla' Eastmans'. They may not put much comment into it as you say, but it's basically supposed to be used as a starting point for you. I think it's great info added to an already great publication.
 
I enjoy both. It's tough and usually expensive to draw a good tag is the bottom line. Most serious hunter know which units are the better ones to apply. Good luck in the draws.
 
Hunting fool has definitely been a better subscription lately and I think someone must have realized that the way it looks. Gary
 
I don't like Eastmans's because DKPeay is mad at Mike for
railing on the "Special Interest" tags. I for one think Don is
a genius and think I will just stick to the net for reference.

The only bobcat hoping Mike will take Don up on his offwer for a debate!!!
 
Eastman vs. Peay

Now that would be fun to watch! Both guys are heavywieghts in the western hunting world. I want to know the whole story on this feud. What did Eastman say that make Peay mad, and how did Don respond?

Nothing like hearing old Mike Eastman talk about tine length and quaker patches. I think Eastmans would hang in their till round 4 when Garth would TKO him with his unit 43 undersubscribed vouchers that are sure to produce anyone a 200 inch buck.
Eastmans actually does have a nice magazine and they seem to put a lot of DIY hunts in there. Guys like Cameron Hanes and David Long really help the publication. Save your money on Garths HuntinFool. I finally pd the money and have to say I was very disappointed.
 
I like Eastman's mag, but that MSR thing is friggen joke. 80% of it is copied right from the state G&F website.
 
I'm sure you guys realize that he is using your $100 bucks towards paying for his hunts. Pretty clever fella.

If you spend a bunch of money every year applying in different states then the information gained from a $100 subscription to the Huntin Fool is invaluable. Things change from year to year and these guys stay up on the latest.

If nothing else, it lets a guy know what units not to put in for (top picks). My 2 Cents.
 
I think it's a real good magazine for the folks out there who actually don't have time to read through regs. in a dozen states and try to research out the best units around.
It gives them a good headstart.
Also a good magazine for guys just getting into hunting trophy game.

The Carter's work hard to provide their clients with the best information possible. You have to admit, they're providing A LOT of information to their customers each year.

Obviously the guys who already consider themselves experts, probably don't need it.

They're all valuable. You can't have too much info when you love to hunt as much as most of us do. What else can we do when we are not hunting?
 
I really look forward every month to geting the Hunting Fool in the mail. I do think the price of the subscription is pretty high. I am also going to sucscribe to Eastman's.
 
1. How do you know the information you are receiving from these publications is accurate? The only way is to go to each state and check the stats to see if it compares to the articles.

2. Is it possible that either of these magazines mislead or leave something out so that they can steer hunters in the wrong direction. Example is when Idaho opened up their non-resident moose hunts and the hunting fool never put information into their publication about it the first year. That is when I began to wonder why they hid this.

3. In the "Hunting fool" I have noticed they comment on many units. I doubt they have spent time in most of these areas, and it seems to me they operate on "rumor" with no real facts to back up their opinions.
 
moneyman.....the MRS is supposed to be just an added bonus to a great magazine. If they wanted to put the time and info in there every week like the "fool" then it would be $100 annually as well. But, for the $24.99 a year, it's a pretty good deal.

Like PleaseDear said.....they both serve their purpose. IMO, for the "average" hunter, the "fool" isn't worth it.
 
Eastman is an arrogant piece of work. I will go with Peay.

The do-it-yourself BS he has printed for years is mostly that, BS! With all emphasis on trophy hunting. I lived by the guy for 8 years and only once did he ever even say hello.

i would love to go at it with Eastman when it comes to wildlife conservation - past, present, and future. Nothing personal, Eastman is just way, way out of touch about what is happening in the west as far as human developement and what needs to be done to try - let me repeat that try and mitigate unprecedented human expanision into the western states.

Sounds like we could raise lots of money for conservation, somebody find Don King - maybee your new career Bobcat - and promote the fight !!

I think both have neg things about them but the possitive side is much larger

My family drew 4 good to great deer tags this last fall I owe the hunting fool part of the credit for that

I love to read storys in Eastmans about the avrage guy or gal getting out there and getting it done

As for the price HELL I bet half of you guys out there that nock the hunting fool and the Carter Family drive $20,000+ trucks with a $10,000 Trailer and 2 $5000 ATVs Lets see YA I think the $100 is money well spent

Anyway WTF why do you all nock it just dont buy it, I dont think the Eastmans or the Carters will hold your family hostage and make you pay them tell you have become a member

Anyway I guess I sound like a idiot and thats OK as I am but hell I will just go read my hunting fool or maybe Eastmans no the Hunting fool first ya it cost me more better get my moneys worth

Don't get either one anymore, just listen to you guys and it's a lot more fun. LMAO

In about "01" I compared all of the issues from the "00" issue each month to the "01" issue. In some states, there were no changes what-so-ever. Just like Garth recopied the previous year's mag with the season dates being updated & took my $100.00.

Then I read where, for about $5.00 more, I could apply for controlled elk in Id. I already bought the license each year and applied for controlled deer. That one tip was worth the $100. Maybe I should have realized that before but the mag brought it out so I could understand it.

Then they improved the mag to color and put some good articles in it and I really liked it.

Then he drove the price of Colorado Landowner Vouchers through the roof and I do and will continue to boycott him. Guess I'm jealous that I didn't think to do it first and pay for damn good hunts with the proceeds.
 
Don't know about Eastmans, but Huntinfool sent me a free copy of the January issue. I enjoyed it so much, I sent in my 100 dollars and became a member. When Garth was a warden in southeastern Utah, he was always very passionate about hunting and his work also. He was helpful to hunters, and a pain in the a-- to law breakers. Looks like he is carring on his work ethic in his new business.
 
I am a long time member of both magazines, but think this will be the last year for both.
While I do compare the stats in HF to my own research, I know better than to take them as 100% truth. Seems those guys always take GIANTS out of units that they didn't mention to us...

The hunting stories are really why I subscribe, but with the same money, I could add another state to my yearly application pool (say Idaho), and actually increase my opportunity to hunt!

Don't get me wrong, both are nice magazines and I enjoy reading them but for me, the juice ain't worth the squeeze.
Plus, with the advertising dollars they draw in, there is really no reason to charge so much for a subscription.
