Warning for all parents/grandparents

Yesterday, my youngest daughter, Halle who is just 4 years old, was rushed to the ER by her father for being severely lethargic and incoherent in her classroom. He was called to her school by the school secretary who said that she was 'VERY VERY SICK'!
He told me that when he arrived at her classroom, Halle was barely sitting in the chair. She couldn't hold her own head up and when he looked into her eyes, she couldn't focus them.

He immediately scooped her up and rushed her to the closest ER, and then called me. When he got there, they ran blood test after blood test and did x-rays, every test imaginable. Her white blood cell count was normal, nothing was out of the ordinary. When I arrived at the ER, the doctor there told
us that he had done everything that he could do so he was transferring her to Saint Francis Hospital for further tests.
Right as we were leaving in the ambulance, her teacher arrived at the ER and told us that after questioning Halle 's classmates, She had found out that our little girl had licked liquid hand sanitizer off of her hands !!!
Hand sanitizer, of all things. But it makes sense. These days they have all kinds of different scents and flavors and when you have a curious child, they are going to put all kinds of things into their mouths. When we arrived at the Saint Francis' Hospital ER, we told the ER Doctor there to check her blood alcohol level, and yes we did get weird looks, but they did
it.

The results showed her blood alcohol level was 85% --This can't be true, jbjb when i first took her, There's no telling what it would have been if we would have requested it at the first ER.

Since then, her school and a few surrounding schools have taken the liquid hand sanitizers out of all the lower grade classes, but what's to stop middle and high schoolers from ingesting this stuff? After doing research on the Internet, we found out that it only takes about 3 squirts of the stuff ingested to be fatal to a toddler.

For her blood alcohol level to be so high, it would be like someone her size drinking120 proof liquor. So PLEASE PLEASE don't disregard this because we don't ever want another family to go through what ours has gone through.

Please send this to everyone you know that have children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews or cousins. It doesn't matter what age. This could affect anyone of them ..

Warning for all parents/grandparents, a friend sent this to me and I thought it was important enough to send on ... ..we all know someone with children --

LAST EDITED ON Dec-12-09 AT 11:22AM (MST)[p]there is no way that story is even remotely true.....and I don't even need to check snopes, if in fact she just licked some off her hands...

great post/pic, thanks for sharing

aw comon just check snopes...

this one's real i swear!

I read all the way to the end of the paragraph this time...

I don't know if the story is true but I work in a correctional facility and inmates have used hand sanitizer to get drunk. One inmate drank enough to start having seizures and had to be taken to the hospitol for treatment. The isopropyl alcohol is very damaging to your stomach. I could easily believe the story but she would have do do more than lick her hands.

OK Manny - I did check Snopes and it does appear that they have checked the facts and the girl did lick hand sanitizer off her hands (probably eats paste and boogers too) and it made her sick. What is PATENTLY FALSE however is that her blood alcohol level was 85%. If this were true should would have been long since dead. They other account quoted on Snopes states that the other little girl's BAC was .10 - and she was a 2 yr. old. So yes it could be plausible that a small child could become very sick after ingesting it and we should as the package suggests "Keep out of reach of children". But like all other common household cleaning agents, teach your kids not to eat them (please do the same for paste and boogers too) and you won't have any problems.

This story may have some truth to it however, it is severely distorted. The highest toxicology result I have ever seen on an accomplished adult alcoholic, not passed out, was shy of a .40.

Hand sanitizer is made with wood alcohol (methanol) as opposed to grain alcohol (ethanol). This by itself presents a whole myriad of problems beyond just being super drunk.

Assuming the 85% alcohol level in the email means .85 BAC, the notion that a 4 year old could be even semi alert, or survive such a dose of wood alcohol is absurd.

In theory, this could happen. In reality, I call BS at least to the extent of the claim of '85%.' Someone is either full of it or does not understand where the decimal place goes.

Hmmmmm, figures. Sure explains your reasoning behind thinking Oregon is the second best team in the land.

I drank a gallon of "Blue Nun" once & saw Jesus. This whole hand sanitizer deal was Pelosi?s idea.

That's it, i'm sending Roy boogers when Oregon stomps OSu. And don't waste them. They are 85% alcohol and chewy...and they are way better than licking your hand...

That's why I never wash my hands or lick my hands. Why take a chance?
