Okay, so I headed out today to just see if I could find the match to the unmatched "6" from yesterday. I never got a chance to get very close to the area. On the hike in, I first found a match to old horn that I found last year. I must not have believed in looking up much on that earlier hike - cuz it was just 200 yards up from last years (and it was old then).
Continuing up the trail, I came to one of those areas that just scream "Elk rest area". Sometimes, those spots prove worthless - and sometimes...
I had picked up the two when I thought, "I'll put my pack down, GPS the spot, and just check a bit for the matches before heading back to the rig.
I checked down slope a bit first and caught sight of a great stick/antler - even took a picture - whoops. That was okay though, cuz right below there I could see real bone behind a tree.
I traversed a whole 40 yards or so when I found this pink, and brittle base (which I left):
Looked around, yes without walking further, and saw another possibility. This matches the earlier antler, and appears to be the previous year to my unmatched 6 from yesterday:
One more time, I simply looked around again after taking the last picture, and another:
The whole group back together: two sets, one that completes a set, one odd one, one spike that I found earlier, and the old base. I wish the rocks would just hold them properly.
Thanks for checking out the pics. I like the pictures of when you first catch a glimpse of the antler- reminds me of when I wondered what to look for myself. Enjoy.
