Well I posted something a couple of months ago about the Vernon West Desert unit for deer. I didn't get too much input back so I hate to bug ya'll again, but I just found out last night that they withdrew the money. So I guess that means I'll be spendin' the season out there. Anyways if anyone knows anything or has heard of anything positive about the unit I would surely appreciate the input. I have heard of two boomers killed out there but they were taken two and three years ago. But any word would be great. Thanks......

It's been at least 4 years since I hunted it and I'm sure things have changed in a big way but it was a great hunt. There were deer everywhere and a few good bucks were showing themselves now and then. From what I understand though the year I drew was the first season after a period of closure and since then things have gone down hill a bit. Anyway I'd have to look at a map to accurately name the place we hunted.

I drew the limited archery tag two years ago. I hunted a total of 15 days. I did not harvest a deer but by far this was the best hunt I have ever been on archery or rifle. We saw 41 different bucks by noon the first day and 5 of those were 170 class and one 180 buck. I bascially hunted around the Harker Canyon area. The problem I had was a huge majority of other hunters were bombing all over on 4 wheelers. Don't get me wrong I used one while I was there but only to get to a certain spot then I would be on foot from sunrise to sunset. These other guys were banging around all day long looking into canyons. Numerous times I was hidden in an canyon spotting nice bucks bedded down. These guys would pull up to the top of the canyon get off their wheelers and stand their glassing. The bucks would just lay their heads flat on the ground and wait them out. One tinme there was a 25" 170 buck not 80 yards from them and the never saw him. It was entertaining to say the least.
So what I'm telling you is spend alot of time on foot and sitting glassing. I would sit for hours in one spot and would find deer everywhere. I also contacted the DWR Biologist in the Springville office. I can not remember his name but he was extermely helpfull with good areas. He said there are some hughe bucks around the radio tower area. Also be vry carefull out hiking, I saw 7 rattlesnakes and killed 4 of them. They seem to love those canyons. There was water in almost every canyon so hunting a waterhole was out of the question. Good old spot and stalk was a heart pounder. Good luck and get into shape for alot of hiking. Hopefully you get to pack one out.

Thanks Jerkee and buckmstr!!! It's good to hear some positive about the area. Jerkee did you kill a deer that year? If so how big? I have an uncle that archery hunted it three years ago and killed a dandy buck but I am not sure if the deer still like to hang out where they were hunting, especially with all the pressure that the area has been hit with. I have heard that the Harker canyon area is one of the top notch spots. Well anyways thanks for the input. I look forward to the hunt. It's gettin' close and I am getting the itch.
Thanks again

I didn't. It was my first year bowhunting and I was about as inexperienced in stalking as a person could get...kinda regret having the tag then. Either way there were bucks everywhere, all day long.
