Deer unit 78

Can someone explain the draw results from this unit last year. I'm a non resident with no points and drew the tag. What was the total tags issued for non residents in this unit? I was lucky to be part of the 42%?

I'd be happy to! The first thing you need to know is that everyone is in the PP Draw regardless of whether you have any PPs or not. If you apply in a low demand unit like 78 was, you can draw a tag in that draw before you even go into the random one where no PPs are used. I assume from your mentioning the 42.03% percentage comment that you entered the Regular price draw and the stats show that there were 35 tags with 6 issued to those who applied with 1PP. Due to party applications 31 tags were then issued to some of the 69 applicants who applied with no PPs. The ones who didn't draw then went to the Random Draw and there was a total of 38 first choice applicants for the 11 tags available in that one. Therefore, you were either issued a tag as one of the 42.03% who drew in the PP Draw or one of the remaining 38 who drew the 11 tags in the Random Draw. It is not possible to know which draw your tag came from in this particular instance.

Thanks TOPGUN! Yeah we put in the regular draw with no points, my Dad and I. We got tags but the other guys who go with us put in for 81 did not. Thinking about trying the same for this year.

LAST EDITED ON May-20-15 AT 10:41PM (MST)[p]Glad to be of help and if the stats stay that way for 2015 there is a pretty decent chance that you can draw your tags again for that unit. Good luck and I hope you can get your Dad out there again this Fall as antelope are a fun hunt!

My relatives all bought a point last year. So they could put in for the draw without using it. Correct? Dad and I couldn't buy one cause we drew a tag I'm assuming.

That is incorrect unless they put in for a unit they can't draw with 1PP because you can't just choose to go into the Random Draw only. Many people don't realize it, but if you don't draw your first choice in the PP Draw and then draw it in the Random Draw on your second chance, you still lose your PPs. If you have PPs purchased from previous years you automatically have to go into either the Regular or Special PP Draw first depending on how much money you want to pay the G&F. As I mentioned last night, everyone goes into the PP Draw first even if you don't have any PPs. However, if you don't draw your first choice you can still get a license on a second or third choice or even as a leftover in July and your PPs would then carry over to the following year. If you all want to hunt unit 78 this year and the stats stay like 2014, the way to do it would be for you to all apply for 78 as a party. That way the PPs the others have is averaged out for the entire group and you would draw a tag before those who apply with a lesser number of PPs. In other words, if 4 of you apply as a party and 2 have a PP each that they purchased last year, the party would go into the draw with an average of 0.5PPs. That would draw the tags in the PP Draw before anyone with a lower PP average.
