Has anyone hunted any of the high country in unit 67 for deer. Looks good. I know there are some horse trails that go through some of the subalpine parts. I have friend that used to hunt it years ago, but has not been there for over 15 years. I always hunt on the west side of Idaho, but i'm looking for some new country to hunt.(tired of the crowds). I've read that the deer numbers are down. Feel free to p.m.

thanks

That unit is hit hard for numbers due to winter kills. If this winter kills many fawns it will be even worse. It can be good for late hunt because it is a migration route to Tex Creek but it is almost impossible to draw that hunt.
There are some other units with much better numbers.

I hunted it in 2007 and had a blast! We saw decent numbers of deer and elk. We returned in 2008 and what a difference! We didn't see near the numbers of animals we had the previous year. There still were some deer but they were in scattered pockets here and there. I haven't been back since. The winter had taken it toll on just about everything but the people!

Lots of hunters and very, very few deer. I switched to the high country near Sun Valley quite a few years ago and have had much better success. Less people also.

If you live in Western Idaho you might want to check into the units around Sun Valley. It would only be about a 2-3 hr drive.

I've looked at Hyndman peak and areas around there muleys24seven. I hunt on foot with a backpack. I'm tired of hunting in 39 with all the motorbikes. You find some killer looking basin 5 miles from the road just to be interupted by a guy on motorcycle. Trying to find country up high where there are no motorcycles allowed.

thks

I have seen some very good deer with huge racks in the mountains near Lava Hot Springs. I think the numbers are good there.

The winter of 2007 took its toll on game herds across the Idaho. Sounds like the F&G is feeding on the east side of the state. We hunt elk in the Salmon River mountains, after the winter of 07 the hills along the south fork looked like a bone yard with all the deer bones. It's stange, I saw lots and lots of deer bones but few elk bones. While hunting elk in the Frank CHurch this year we saw lots of young deer. Its taken 3 years for the deer to bounce back up there. Hopefully this winter doesn't wipe them back out.

I hunted unit 67 the last 5 years. It use to be good until the 2008 winterkill. Last year I had tags on both sides of the state line. I hiked in seven miles and stayed 6 days. I saw very very few buck. Dang disapointing concidering how good it use to be.

Longbow is correct. Take a look at the success rates for 67 in Idaho and 151 in Wyoming- these stats are on the F&G websites. You can see a HUGE drop in success after the 2008 winterkill. Awesome country, but they need to cut down on the hunters/harvest for several years to bring the population back up.

Me and a partner had a tag for the wyoming side in 08......horrible hunt! spent a total of 12 days in the field and only seen about 25 deer, we think it had a lot to do with 07/08 winter kill.

Sit tall in the saddle, hold your head up high, keep your eyes fixed to where the trail meets the sky...
